Matching hardwood stair treads to existing laminate floors

My house is a raised ranch. As soon as you walk in the front door you are in a foyer area that has one staircase leading up to the main living area and one staircase leading down to the finished basement. The previous owners put laminate flooring in the foyer and main living area, but did not leave any extra. The flooring is discontinued and I cannot get it anywhere (trust me, I’ve tried). The stairs are currently carpeted, but I really want to go with hardwood stair treads with white risers. The stairs are just too high-traffic for carpet. The problem is that we’ll never be able to perfectly match the stairs to the existing laminate. Should we even try or should we purposely contrast? The current floor has a multi-tone look so maybe we should just pull out one of the colors to do the stairs? Also, any advice on what species of wood for the treads?
