Hardwood stair treads with laminate flooring?

My house has a split entry. The previous owners put laminate flooring in the foyer and main living area and carpeted the stairs that connect the two. I would really like to switch out the carpet for hardwood stair treads with white risers. Should we even try to match the stair treads to the laminate or should we purposely contrast? The current floor has a multi-tone look so maybe we should just pull out one of the colors to do the stairs? Also, any advice on what species of wood for the treads?
