Which blooms first?
Comments (1)fgoldberg, There are many variables to the bloom time of bulbs and bulb species but in general here are the bloom times of the species you listed: - Scilla - Common name - English Bluebells, zones 5-8, bloom time late spring - Ipheion - Common name - Spring Starflower, zones 5-10, bloom time midspring - Chiodoxa - Common name - Glory of the snow, zones 3-9, bloom time early spring Hope this helps. I have found some really good information at the website below and a pretty good newsletter that covers a little bit of everything. I have found that you can also ask questions from a professional. Comments (3)I'm sorry you both had bad luck with MJP. I'm afraid I can't post a photo, as I don't have a digital camera. My brother will be coming to Sacramento for a visit, and I'll ask him to bring his - and for my part, I'll investigate my Mac to see if I can do what needs to be done to enter a photo and post it to the GW (I don't know ANYTHING about this side of computerdom!). I THINK there's a program on it that handles photos. I know that I bought this rose based on the painting Vintage showed, rather than basing my choice on a photo (apparently they didn't have one, at least at that time), so it was kind of like buying a pig in a poke. Later, when I asked about the rose on this forum, someone posted a photo of it so I could see what it looked like - it was a picture of the bush at Vintage, with blooms on it, and it looked quite nice. It's small, which I need it to be. I should emphasize that it's not a SPECTACULAR rose - it's charm is in its coloration and the blossom's delicate structure. The bloom came on a new, vigorous cane that shot up from underground, and the original cane has not done much, although it's still leafy. Another of my group of babies did the same thing, so maybe this is how it works. I'm new to all this. I'll really try to get a picture. Laura...See MoreWhich Will Bloom First Contest 2014
Comments (38)Hansa has a few blooms now. I'll have to check on Blanc Double de Coubert, but she's in too much shade and probably isn't blooming yet. There are lots of buds on Therese Bugnet, but that's about it so far....See MoreWednesday Pictures
Comments (9)Rita, What glorious pictures you have today! I just love that mass of ROCKET CITY and SPELLBINDER! It's like a big row of sunshine! I was also drooling over your lillies...orientals are my favorites, and I can just imagine the smell drifting from that garden! DANCING WITH SANDRA is my favorite of the group...probably caught my eye because I had never seen it before and just love the bright color combo with the light edges! I was surprised to hear that my version of OFF BEAT was more colorful that what many people have in their gardens...doesn't happen that way very often! I know that my eyezones on this type of bloom are usually different than most (my versions of GIFT FROM HEAVEN and PRICKLED PETALS are a perfect example). Wonder if it is due to the fact that we cool off more at night than a lot of areas, or soil? Like I said in my post, the first picture I posted off it was taken at 6:00 in the am, after a night in the high 50's. It is in an area that doesn't get sun until around noon. Yesterday got to almost 90 degrees (unusual for us) and a lot of my blooms were really faded when I got home at 7:30pm. This was what it looked like then... Daylilies are strange creatures!
