What do you think of first , when you think of things.... .....
Comments (6)Ornithogalums??? Oh vetivert, you are bad, but Ornithogalum is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of spring chores and getting to work outside, usually in late Feb. Now I realize my question could have and should have been phrased a lot better. How about this? If the Bulb Forum members would submit their (own) pics of plants and blooms grown from bulbs for a new forum picture, what should it be? . Should it be open to anything grown from bulbs? Should it maybe exclude such things that have more 'specific' forums of their own, such as Lily, Tropical, and House Plant? Should it be an individual bloom, or as you suggested, maybe a still life flower arrangement of numerous delectable blooms grown from bulbs? Please 'scuse me for just having tunnel vision and tunnel thoughts of just Daffodils. At any rate, the folks who are having their spring now, can hopefully be trying to get some great pics. Ok...so when does anyone think we could/should start taking picture submissions? Should we wait until late 2010 so glads could be included by those in the US who grow them? Should we wait a full year (or nearly) so the members down under have an opportunity to have another summer blooming season, like for glads? hmmm...what is fairest? I guess before proceeding, I should check with the 'Powers that be' to see for sure if they would be willing to get the pic changed and updated with a pretty pic of our choosing. I hope lots of folks will give their input and in time, post their pics for entry. In doing a search here on the forum, it seems that Tulips and Daffs are the 2 things most often posted about. I imagine though that tulips are most frequently asked about, due to them having problems, or emerging early, or for not blooming a second season when they are thought to be perennials like daffodils. Here is a spring 2009 pic of a bouquet of Daffodil Show rejects. Hopefully in 2010, I can put together a much better arrangement and pic. Comments (44)OOOH am I glad I found this site. I bought an entire bedroom set at an auction for $35 (included a head/foot board, tall dresser, and mirrored dresser). I found it last year and bought it because I liked the mirrored dresser and plan to use it in my bathroom. I have a coworker that used a small dresser for a vanity in her bathroom and I loved it. On the one I bought, the mirror has the middle section with two narrower side panels to it and all are surrounded with wood and I plan to mount this to the wall over the dresser. I have not yet decided what to do with the top - use a whole new countertop or have a sink dropped into the existing top. My question here is this: the wood is already stained dark and I like it but, since will be exposed to water and steam, should I somehow seal it? My friend painted hers so that sealed the wood. This is an older piece (1930's maybe at the latest) and I want to make sure it's sealed against swelling. Do I use regular varnish, marine varnish? And will this extra layer make the drawers tighter and harder to close? I know about making room for the plumbing but I have not seen any discussion about protecting the wood from the dampness. Any help and thoughts would help. Thanks, Colleen...See MoreWhat style is this antique dresser and what pulls do I need? pic
Comments (11)Yes...Eastlake....and the drop[ pulls are accurate....are you missing some? If you do get new....keep the old ones and only replace what's needed. The nails show because there were decorations, veneer and perhaps a rosette and someone removed them....and the nails are what's left. Pity. But it's still very nice... It's several kinds of wood....I don't see any walnut but then I am not close to it....likely butternut, which is a walnut variety but lighter in color...and perhaps maple and birch. Would have had at one time burl trim. Linda c...See MoreWhat do you think of this antique mirror for my sideboard?
Comments (20)jejvtr: What a pretty and unusual mirror. I would snap that up in a heartbeat if that were on Craigslist! (And, yours too, Red!) You are right the sideboards are quite similar. I have just fallen in love with antique mahagony. New mahogany just does not have that same vibrant look. Your mirror will look lovely raised up. What are the dimensions of your mirror? I think I'm going to buy the second one on Craigslist that I pictured on Monday that is 42x24. The gilt is brighter and is on a smaller scale than the first--plus original glass. I spoke to the lady and she seems in no hurry to sell which is great for me as we have guests this weekend and that is the soonest I can get there. If I get this one, this will make the second item I've bought in my home from children helping their aged parents downsize their homes. Kind of sad, at the same, time, I feel these people must've loved these items and would like to see them appreciated again....See Morecarolb_w_fl_coastal_9b
