What style is this antique dresser and what pulls do I need? pic

I need to replace the pulls on this antique dresser. When I first purchased this 15 years ago it came with victorian style drop pulls. I have no way of knowing if they were orignal. I'm wondering if that's the correct hardware for this piece. If you look closely you can see little nail heads all over the piece. Someone may have refinished it. I think it's walnut.

So what type of pulls do I look for? thanks!

You may want to ask Linda C. but I think that is a East Lake furniture. I have no idea what type of pulls.

GCSciencechick, the Empire period was around 1815-1840. That means that Empire furniture is coming up on 200 years old now. As said, an Empire renaissance is coming, with appreciation for itincreasing dramatically--along with its price. If only I'd liked Empire more, I'd have been collecting it for decades as for most of my life it's been the only genuinely antique, fine quality furniture I can afford good pieces of. That said, yours is in poor condition, which will probably severely limit its price and restoration appeal for another few decades--until the good-condition stuff becomes prohibitively expensive for most people. AND you don't like it. Someone may have suggested this, but if you don't pass it on to someone who does want it, you might consider applying a coat of something removable to protect what is left of the original finish and the wood, then go ahead and fill and paint over that. Turning that homely, beat-up old thing into something that would be appreciated and cared for over these coming decades is not the worst thing that could happen to it by far.

Ha! I don't dare call my mother to tell her that I have found yet another one, and I NEED TO STOP! I truly have NO place for them, but the challenge and learning experience with each one is just what I love. And, just maybe, I'll learn something that can bring me a few dollars when I retire, although so far, I'd hate to give up any of my 'babies'. When I start tripping over them, it'll be easier to let go. :-) On the Antique form, I got 'Jacobean Revival', and I did find an image that is very close. Now that Mary Ruth has weighed in, I see another Antique Flemish chair (link below) that is also very much like it. This one that, gulp, yes, I am buying for $45, is oak. Bargain? What do you all think? The CL seller bought it to re-do, but has never gotten around to it. She is even including the fabric that she bought to re-do, which I have not seen, but she describes as 'nice, a rich looking tapestry fabric.' A friend who is in Northern Maine until Thursday AM is picking up this chair for me in our state capitol Thursday AM and bringing it to me, as he goes right through Augusta on his trip back south. That IS a great piece and chalk paint would be wonderfully easy, and would adhere well to the existing. You got very lucky with your Craigslist. I know that you just want to paint it now, but in a few years, if you want to do something that is fun and EASY, look at what I am doing with a similar dresser from 'my' Craigslist. All I did was cut some fabric to size for the drawer fronts, and glued it on with ModgePodge, which can be found in any craft store. It acts as glue, and then you do several coast of it on top of the fabric to act as sealer. It just takes a very light sanding between coats, and you're done! I agree that glass knobs would be perfect on yours. I just looked on eBay and found some that are very reasonable priced, and he has a good selection. See link below. They can be very pricey, so I'll be looking at his, too! (I have NO affiliation with ANY seller on eBay; I just like to shop there.) Before - During, as I haven't finished it yet. I would try to fix the crack, if you can get the insert out of the door frame; that's just me - it would bug me. If you can show us the room and bed it's going next to, it may spur more suggestions. Another option for the top, if you have the painting bug and perhaps something on the top doesn't come off with sanding, would be to clean it and sand it smooth and do something like a faux marble paint job on it. It's really very easy. This was my first (and only so far) on the top of a small pine desk/table. I did it with acrylic craft paints. It doesn't show here, but it had a stain on the top from some very red colored stain that just wouldn't come off.

Yes, it's Eastlake, from approximately the 1890's. The drop pulls that are on it are accurate and you should be able to find similar reproductions without too much trouble. The little shelves on either side of the mirror are candle shelves.

We have a similar dresser from my MIL's side. Inside one drawer is a note written in pencil that the dresser's cost was $11, and $1 was paid down on the price and the rest was to be paid in installments.

thanks folkviictorian, I'll take a look. Does anyone know why all the little nailheads are showing? Was that the style?

Maybe you can post the question on the Antiques board. My only wild guess would be that whoever refinished it took off the veneers and sanded the wood beneath them and inadvertently exposed the nail holes. Someone over in Antiques and Collectibles might have a more plausible explanation! Good luck!

Yes...Eastlake....and the drop[ pulls are accurate....are you missing some? If you do get new....keep the old ones and only replace what's needed.
The nails show because there were decorations, veneer and perhaps a rosette and someone removed them....and the nails are what's left. Pity.
But it's still very nice...
It's several kinds of wood....I don't see any walnut but then I am not close to it....likely butternut, which is a walnut variety but lighter in color...and perhaps maple and birch. Would have had at one time burl trim.

Renaissance Revival
A few years pre-eastlake.
The drop pulls are probably much in keeping with the originals. Eastlake preferred flat angular metal backplates with incised decorations and bail pulls.

It's Cottage-- I have a similar one with the original paint. The pulls are carved like acorns. I've got the tag, too-it was sold in Boston in 1877 by M. Keating "Painted Chamber Furniture in every style" of 117 North Street.

The old mirror was broken by movers and I'm seeking another to replace it before my daughter gets back from college.

Maybe some mother of pearl dress pulls.

MOTHER OF PEARL FLOWER BED PULL is really pretty, lots of tiny small pearl flowers fixed on a round mount.
