Me too!! Even if you dont like it paired with your sideboard I would get it anyway and find somewhere else for it at that price. I personally like a larger mirror, it opens up the room, and if you want buffet lights on each side you want them to glow against the mirror. If you go any smaller they will be off to the side unless you bring them closer together. I dont have a sideboard, I only wish I could fine one as gorgous as yours but heres my sofa table with a mirror above it.

LOVE the mirror! I think it's perfect, and goes with your beautiful new furniture. I have a huge painting above my side board, it's almost the same frame..at first I thought it would be too big, but it really makes a statement ..I think the mirror is perfect, great find!

kellyleeann: Thanks for posting the pic of your large mirror with the lamps. Your mirror is georgeous in the silver tones and the lamps are darling. That is the effect I am envisioning--only with more of a warm bronze glow.

I sent an email to the seller and hope to view it tomorrow if DH gives the green light. I'm still a little unsure of my decorating vision, but all these great pics and advice are so helpful putting it all together. Another great thing about the size it that it will be opposite my living room with fireplace accent wall (where I hope to purchase a nice paining one of these days after I put some furniture there) which will reflect.

It is a very pretty mirror. I think the width will be fine, and the lamps being reflected would be nice.

That said, I personally would prefer a simpler framed mirror there. I think your buffet has simple, elegant lines, and would benefit from a simpler frame on the mirror over it.

I think a dining room is the one place that you can go over the top with reckless abandon, set the table with the most elegant crystal, outlandish silver and even China featuring Medussa, chandliers that would make the Queen glow and mirrors that would make Napolean taller. I like the mirror and I think it is over the top in a beautiful way. Buy it and if you don't like it, let me know. I will buy it from you.

Heard back from the seller. It is still available; however, the mirror is cracked so I would essentially be buying just the frame. I will be checking with a glass place to get a quote on adding a new beveled mirror because I do like the frame. It looks to be guilded, but cannot be sure.

I think a round mirror, which would echo the curve and hardware of the sideboard and the curves of the chairs, would be wonderful. I think the finish would work nicely, too.

With such a large window immediately to the right of the sideboard, another large rectangle might feel too much like another 'window'. I also think the buffet lamps would sit nicely on either side of this or something like this.

I have a very similar set to yours that was set up in the same way in my previous home. I had this mirror leaned against the wall on top of the buffet vertically with lamps on either side. The mirror is 30'' x 42'' and got it at Winner's here in Canada (TJMaxx in the US?) for about $100. You should secure it to the wall even tho it is leaning against it.

I like the mirror, by itself, but I don't think the scale and style of the details on the mirror and the sideboard are very compatible.

Although the pics of the mirror where dark, from what I can see, the sideboard and table and chairs hark (stylistically speaking) from the end of one century (the 18th) and the mirror from the end of the 19th c., and in between those points proportions changed.

As another poster suggested, I think I would be looking at something with more delicate, perhaps even plainer, frame details in order to stay in the same language as your beautiful dining room furniture. Gilt would be nice with all that mahogany, too, and I think you could get away with more ornateness in a different material than a dark brown wood piece. (I'm glad you're planning on hanging it above face level as mirrors and faces and forks never make me feel at ease.)

Description places it as 1940's which is the same era as the dining set, it's a tad smaller (42x24), and definitely can tell it's gilt.

les: Thank you for taking the time to post a pic of the round mirror. Generally, my taste runs towards simple and elegant lines and I see your point about the round shape and like one like that if I could find a reasonably priced antique one.

Red, I always enjoy seeing pictures of your house. It has that look that is warm and inviting, timeless and not matchy-matchy, just off the press, but timeless and beautiful, welcoming and warm, yet serene and calm.

Jetjvr........Gorgeous set. Mirror is lovely. Yes, it needs to be re-hung, but it looks outstanding. And after you raise it up 6" or so, you're gonna want buffet lamps or tall chunky candles or something on the sides. It's going to lead to more purchases. Happens to me all the time.

jejvtr: What a pretty and unusual mirror. I would snap that up in a heartbeat if that were on Craigslist! (And, yours too, Red!) You are right the sideboards are quite similar. I have just fallen in love with antique mahagony. New mahogany just does not have that same vibrant look. Your mirror will look lovely raised up. What are the dimensions of your mirror? I think I'm going to buy the second one on Craigslist that I pictured on Monday that is 42x24. The gilt is brighter and is on a smaller scale than the first--plus original glass. I spoke to the lady and she seems in no hurry to sell which is great for me as we have guests this weekend and that is the soonest I can get there. If I get this one, this will make the second item I've bought in my home from children helping their aged parents downsize their homes. Kind of sad, at the same, time, I feel these people must've loved these items and would like to see them appreciated again.

I have an almost identical mirror, but mine is lacking the decorative carving on top; guess it wasn't as gently used. ;^)
