What do you think I should do?
Comments (5)I definitely think you should go to hort school in the area where you plan to have the business, unless you already have extensive knowlege of the plants in the midwest--I'm guessing climate zone 5 or possibly 6. There is a vast difference in the flora between the midwest and Florida, and my educated guess is that hort school in Fla will focus on plants grown in that climate. This will not set you up for being knowledgeable about the very business you want to be in. Although I don't regret it, as I did not go into a plant business, I got my BS in botany in the Pacific Northwest, zone 8, but made my home in Ohio. I learned alot about the Pac NW native flora, as well as all the woody ornamentals that grow there. I fell in love with broad-leaf evergreens and many plants that simply will not grow here. I had alot to learn about growing in the midwest when I got back from college. Florida is an even more extreme case. Also, when you go to grad school, the idea is to specialize, and to learn more specific information for a career, than most bachelor's degrees, which tend to be more general. Might as well specialize in the plants you want to focus your business on. Well thats my opinion...good luck!!! Let us know what you decide! Shelly...See MoreDo you think I should get this chair
Comments (42)OK, everyone, I didn't mean to get y'all so excited about the prospect of seeing a chair recovered. LOL First, I apologize I don't have a photo tonight. DH came home and I was napping so he took the chair out of my van to put in his so he could take it to the house tomorrow. I'll have him take photo's of it once he gets it inside. I told him to put it in the office for now so it will be out of the way of the finishing work on the house. I'm not sure where it will live permanently because as you know I'm not in my new house yet. I hate to tell you, but it won't be covered yet as I'm still in the deciding stages of drapes, etc. for the house. newdawn, I don't have a lot of nice upholstered chairs like this one (will be). I just have some wooden rockers for the porch, an old one that has a beat up fabric seat that needs major reapir by DH before I can think of restoring any beauty to it and a side chair that needs a new seat cover and cushion. I'm waiting for the weather to get cooler before I start embarking on some of my refinishing projects because the heat is so oppresive here. I get weak after being outside more than 1/2 an hour. Here is a photo of 2 cypress rockers my sister gave me as a house warming gift. They are hand made by a gentleman in a small Louisiana town and they only cost $100 each. All they need is a clear coat to bring out the beauty of the wood. They are the most comfortable chairs I've ever sat in. I apologize for the blurry photo....See MoreSo, what do you think? Should I go for it?
Comments (21)Thanks Riverspots for your suggestion- I have actually seen one repro. of his work (at Ikea they have one which obviously is not the same but by him and the same idea =- women sitting at a bar socializing- but it is this painting- the whole theme of it- that I think is so great! I have researched this up the ying yang (trying to contact a gallery in Israel where the artist currently resides), but to be honest- I can't even come close to paying the prices for the original pieces. This one is (and i say this loosely) only $999.00 Still more than I would ever have spent on art in the past, but reasonable for something of this size and perfection.. I am not so concerned about the colors being off a little- My whole house is .full of earth-tones so I feel like no matter how off they are it will blend. I do appreciate your input though!! If i had a little spare change I might consider buying an original.. maybe someday!!! :)...See MoreWhat do you think of this redbud? Should I bring it home?
Comments (22)Thanks for all the input. In Montreal we only Have one high-end nursery that sells these and the big box stores do not. It is a plain cercis canadensis. The grower is in Ontario with perhaps a milder zone. I don't think it was dug up from the wild. This one overwintered here in our conditions at the nursery and has done beautifully in terms of flowering and health. The price therefore might reflect this. I paid 450 Canadian for a 2.5 m high one. About 325 us? Even the small ones (4 feet) were almost 200 cad. I might be ripped off but I almost don't care? Supply and demand.... I think i will go for it. If you allow me to come back and ask questions :)...See Morelindac
