Bacteria, Why maintain it?
Comments (6)When I clean my pond and filters I always reserve a piece of the quilt batting I use as a filter. If it will be out of the flow for an hour or more which is not common I put it in a bucket of water with a bubbler under the batting. That prevents the bacteria from dying. Once I am ready to put in the new batting, I just put the piece of old batting in first. It acts as a starter. If I didn't change out the water when I clean the filter, even that would be overkill. There are plenty of bacteria and microbes living in the water and on every surface in the pond. They reproduce fast. Turning off the water flow turns off the oxygen that allows aerobic bacteria to stay alive. Water that is still loses oxygen and anaerobic bacteria, the kind you don't want, thrives. I am posting a site you may find interesting. Here is a link that might be useful: Ron's Pond Scum...See MoreWhy is it...
Comments (10)Sun, rain... What about wind? Friday afternoon was a lovely day, just enough clouds to keep the sun from scorching me as I worked about the yard. It wasn't until I went to put in a new lasagna garden that the wind kicked up. So much for my hot date Friday night--I had grass clippings and mulch in my hair, eyes, and a strangely-shaded compost-colored "tan" an hour before hubby arrived home from work to pick me up. Of course, woke up Saturday morning, and the air was still, the birds were singing, and I was madly dashing about collecting the items for my regional plant swap. Sure woulda liked to work on the garden some. Today: cold and crappy. Likely to clear up this afternoon; of course, the family is taking me out for Mother's day later... Those strawberries are just gonna have to wait! Proof positive that God has a sense of humor, that's why! He knew that we would all be getting together on GW to commiserate!...See MoreWhy is it......?

Comments (2)The teams are quite evenly matched ... ... and they have playdowns to weed out the inferior performers. It says here. Plus, occasionally they finish in 6, or 5 games. If you want to get incensed about something ... ... how about the rules that allow the goon players to smash the heads of the good ones, giving them a concussion ... and after a few of them - they're out of the game for good. Here's an idea ... ... suppose they do some research to find a machine than can administer a concussion without causing other deleterious effects. Then count the number of persons sitting on the Board of Governors of the National Hockey League, plus the head honcho, plus all of the owners of the various teams ... plus the aforementioned Don Cherry (television performer). Then count that many ping-pong bals, paint, say, 5 - 10% of them brown, green, purple, black, or whatever colour you choose. Put all of the balls into a large urn in a benighted room, then blindfold the various people and lead them into the room, one at a time, to pick out one of the balls. If they pick a coloured one - they visit the concussion machine! One doubts whether the goons administering concussions would persist long, following such an exercise. ole joyful...See More- 7 years ago
