Eat-in kitchen: do you eat at an island? Do you like it?
Comments (41)Before we remodel we struggled w/ this issue. In the end we made a bigger investment so that we could eat at a table & have an island. I am very glad we did. I almost always choose to have our family dinner at the table-- it seems so much more civilized and relaxed and an improtant time for our family of four to be/dine together -- which is only 3-4 times a week. When we sit at the table there have been so many improtant discussions that take place. They are critcal teaching moments for our teenage children. Also I am a stickler for table manners & it is hard to do that the island. Lunch & Breakfast happens at the island. FYI- We increased the kitchen floor plan byremoving diningroom wall & absorbing that space into our kichen plan. The dining room furniture then moved to share space with our oversized living room. Two years later- I am sooo happy we did this....See MoreHow would you decorate around this TV? Or would you move?
Comments (31)Call your cable company and ask if they have a smaller more attractive box if you have had it for more than a year. Can you post a picture of what you see looking from the sofa directly forward? Could you just put the TV right there in that area, it looks wide and then put a screen behind it. I have added a link. You could put pictures across the top row and maybe just solid color paper or something in the others. Good luck and please post when you decide what functions for you. Comments (27)Wing back chairs are a traditional look. What is your style? If I were picking out furniture for an area like that, I would want an ottoman for my feet, and as much as they scream hospital to me, maybe a set of interlocking "C" side tables so that if I and my significant other both would like to have coffee and something to nibble on at the same time, we can both have a table to use, rather than having to worry about everything fitting on the one table, or having to get a gigantic table in the middle, and still having to twist to the side to reach something on it which as you get older is less and less of a cinch. At least those "C" tables these days are getting better looking and you can put them right in front of you if you want for your java and croissant and your morning paper (boy, am I dating myself) and you don't have to feel like you are using the hospital table, they are getting so good looking now. You may know that men like a big leather chair, and they are marvelous. And if you get a nice dark brown, a little spilled coffee or dog slobber can be easily wiped up. Or not even noticed :) Some men loove a leather recliner. And some women swear they would never have one in their house. If you can lean a bit modern-ish, a great compromise is the classic Eames chair with the matching ottoman. You can get a great replica....See MoreKitchen eating area layout and decor
Comments (2)depends on how you live..your budget ..plans..etc, The dining zone in an open area can be made special/a destination with large pedestal table/ceiling fixture above/ really comfortable chairs and USE the seating for more than just mealtime. Or a smaller rectangular /drop leaf table can be pushed against the wall and your living zone chairs back into the space a little more because this is open. You could put a longer /narrower farmhouse/trestle table of a vintage sort with fun chairs/cushions and dress it all up for Holidays and so on. If that's a fridge [lower box], I might consider pantry cab adjacent and remove bakers rack, esp right now, and look at the whole space with different kinds of tables in mind...how each would fit in?, appropriate types for you folks? /etc....See Moreadnichols34
