Comments (95)Thanks all, I think she's beautiful but I'm biased. It's hard for me to realize that at the end of this month she'll be 9 months old and almost full grown. Seems like she was a fuzzy little puppy just a short time ago! Les, if I could share the good weather with you I sure would. It's 75 right now and I'm loving it. Of course I do know that it's February so it will get colder again....but this sure has been a wonderful break from, what for us, has been a very cold and snowy winter....See MoreMaine Craigslist - another incredible score!
Comments (42)that sounds great! if you are in a large city, there is usually a jr. league thrift sale every year. Let me tell you, these poor ladies have to give new, or look like new, 5 items! I think they go to art shows just to buy things for it. I have scored big time, artsie phartsi and even a pin i know is silver, and i think real gold, hand made. $2. All that art show stuff is under $2. Giant paintings, under $5. the line starts at 7 am and winds for blocks, we always went late and still got deals. Another one we had was for a local college, the college was private, but was housed in a gorgeous hotel built by a railroad baron. Had a museum and the school had it's own art gallery. Anyone who was anyone in the city belonged to their museum and sat on their board. That sale was to die for. Real silver silverware, antique lace, couches for like $200 or less with those expensive tags in them. Yummmy! Just a matter of knowing where to go. Locally, we have weekly auctions. People have no idea of value. Delmarva is like an antiques mecca. this auction will sell a whole table for $1, yeah most is nearly valueless, but 1/3-1/2 is really something! and furnishings! gotta go, my mouth is watering....See MoreHow Many of You Have Traditional or English-Style Interiors?
Comments (139)Another New York Times article about the things we love, How Low Will Market for Antiques Actually Go? Just part of the article, Compared with the heyday of antiques collecting, prices for average pieces are now “80 percent off,” said Colin Stair, the owner of Stair Galleries auction house in Hudson, N.Y. “Your typical Georgian 18th century furniture, chests of drawers, tripod tables, Pembroke tables,” he noted, can all be had for a fraction of what they cost 15 to 20 years ago. In 2002, Mr. Stair sold a set of eight George III-style carved mahogany chairs for $8,000; in 2016, he sold a similar set of eight chairs for $350. In 2003, he dispatched a Regency breakfront bookcase for $9,500; in 2016, the sales price of an equivalent piece had plummeted to $1,300. ... Dealers, auctioneers and designers point to a number of reasons for the declining interest in antiques and rapid rise of contemporary design. More homes have open-concept, casual living spaces rather than formal dining rooms and studies, which reduces the need for stately mahogany dining tables, chairs and cabinets. “In these big rooms, a contemporary piece becomes a piece of sculpture,” said Christine Van Deusen, a New York designer who recently commissioned numerous custom creations from Maison Gerard, Cristina Grajales Gallery and Iliad for a client’s duplex penthouse on the Upper East Side. “Vintage and antiques are finite, but creativity is infinite, so I can do things that I could not do if I were only looking for things that were in existence.” Midpriced retailers like Restoration Hardware, West Elm and CB2 make it easy to buy tasteful furniture on the cheap, with little hunting required. And a new generation of homeowners may be rebelling against the preferences of their elders. “The 40-something crowd isn’t looking to put a highboy in their house,” said Ethan Merrill, the third-generation president of Merrill’s auctioneers and appraisers near Burlington, Vt. (and Todd Merrill’s brother). “They relate more to pop culture, fashion-oriented materials and rock ‘n’ roll.” ... Will other 18th and 19th century furniture pieces ever return to fashion? Many designers say that antiques will rise again but, after nearly two decades of decline, few are willing to predict when. “The pendulum is going to swing just like it does in politics,” said Mr. Hayes. “It always does. But I don’t see it coming anytime soon.” Jamie Drake, the New York interior designer, also views the current dismissal of antiques as a trend, “just as color trends have moved from neutrals to vibrants, back to neutrals, back to vibrants,” he said. In his own home, most of the furniture and art is contemporary and modern, “but I do still have some antiques,” he said. A home without them, he added, “would be like a sentence without punctuation.”...See MoreFrench Country decor
Comments (35):-D What can I say? I don't have a lot of use for the stylized, homogenized elements that become de rigueur for specific "styles." For instance, hanging a tobacco basket, some fake cotton plants, and a barnwood sign that says "Farmhouse" on the wall somehow makes something "farmhouse" style. I liken it to the saying about being a Lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't. I think the best rooms are deeply personal, filled with items that have meaning or stories to them. Not selected because they match the rug, or because brass tchotchkes on shelves between books that are turned with their spines facing away are trending on Pinterest. If you can sweep away the contents of a room and replace them without a second thought, why were they there to start with? I do occasionally get arguments on this point. On one occasion, I claimed that a particular pseudo-celebrity's new kitchen was cold and devoid of personality. This was challenged by someone who insisted that maybe "clean and devoid of clutter" was their personality. I've also seen it argued that redecorating to whatever is currently trendy IS some people's "style." I don't really buy either argument. I think that the folks who MAKE these arguments haven't sat still long enough to determine what their own style might be. Or lack the confidence to give voice to it, for fear what they like might be outre'. Go forth and be delightfully outre', I say:...See MoreRita / Bring Back Sophie 4 Real
