Craigslist chair re-born - 1st upholstery attempt !
Comments (52)qknitter - You are LUCKY! Can you shows us 'before' pics? The staples in this chair were incredibly hard to pull out. There was NO WAY I could get them out with even a less expensive tack puller. If yours come out with a screwdriver and pliers, I'm jealous. Many of mine broke as I tapped the tack puller into them. The 'real' upholsterer showed me that I had been using my tack puller incorrectly. I was just taking those sharp points and trying to wedge them under the top of the staple, and then prying them out. He grabbed a small hammer that I had in here and he used that to it the wooden handle of the tack puller and drive it up under the tack, then push on the handle to bring the staple up. 99% of them still needed to be pulled out with pliers or 'side cutters' that I have similar to what I linked below. The cutters are very sharp, so they sometimes cut the tack I was trying to pry out and the fun continued, but I was determined after making that back cushion and seeing the improvement. If your tacks come out easily, you're very lucky. The upholsterer saw my chair and said 'It's the worst type to re-do' and that's because of all the staples. I did spend hours removing them, but sewed in between sessions to rest my hands. Here is a link that might be useful: Diagonal Cutting Plier...See MoreAnother Maine CL bargain find! Comments (27)BH - now at THAT price, why wouldn't you scoop up one of those tables for your coffee table? They look like they'd be perfect cut down. CP, that love seat is adorable! I just love the old one in my office, that started out rust and ivory big checks from 'Country Farm Furniture', I don't know how many years ago. The small size is perfect, and it looks to be the size of yours. Great job re-doing it! Update - my sister scoffed up the 'all leather' chair above faster than you can imagine. It's in her bedroom already where I hear it looks great. My mother wants the other one, but I told her I'd find her another chair for her bedroom! It'll be the payment for the next time she has to baby sit my dogs when I travel for work....See MoreWhat would you LOVE to find on Craigslist?
Comments (43)I totally have what I call my "mental shopping list" that I look for any time I'm on CL, HG, etc. I used to look for a nice, earth toned, non-floral stained glass lamp. Finally found a gorgeous one about 2 weeks ago, for $20. Bent stand, but that's ok - I can get a new stand easier than a gorgeous shade. Would like to find a substantial foyer/console table. Something like RH's $2995 salvaged wood sideboard, but for maybe $100. :) Wicker queen headboard for guest bedroom. Toilet etagere for guest bathroom. Copper tray, or copper topped side table for great room. 8 - 10' round jute rug for eat-in kitchen. And the list goes on... That stained glass lamp is really my first "score". My CL is loaded with junk, and people who think junk is really valuable....See MoreShow us your best Craigslist or eBay bargain?
Comments (82)I love many of the finds pictured here. I live in an economically depressed, rural area, and most of Craigslist is uninspiring and often unintentionally funny. Some people have big ideas about what their junk is worth! We've done well in the Farm & Garden section, however, both buying and selling. This summer I acquired a riding mower for $375 delivered. The owner is a mechanic (turned out he retired from the company my son works for), and the mower was well cared for. But mostly I came back here to thank My3dogs for starting this thread. As soon as I saw the title, I remembered that it had been awhile since I last checked Craigslist for a cedar wardrobe. My house is very old, and has almost no closets. I've been keeping my various jackets in an ancient but worthless wardrobe that is ready to fall apart, so I've been looking for a good replacement for about a year. Most of the ones listed had no bar for hanging clothes, and were overpriced anyway. So I saw your thread and went directly to Craigslist, where I found the perfect cedar wardrobe: just the right size, with a bar inside the top and a nice drawer on the bottom--for $75! The people even agreed to keep it for me until after Christmas, when my son can get it with his pickup. Thanks, and happy holidays to all!...See Moretraci_from_seattle
