Wal-Mart Dendrobium...can you believe I think it has a virus???
Comments (23)Hort, who are these professionals? You will be hard pressed to find them. I've been trying to grow things for 37 years and still plants cark it. That is why we need an orchid forum. Sometimes you will find in posts little hints that make a difference. Anyway, it all comes down to conditions, conditions, conditions. Your Wal-Mart Dendrobium is probably a hard-cane, i've got about thirty of them and not many people grow them around these parts because they are considered "Difficult" . As for the disease, your plant is just showing what happens when conditions do not suit. I had one that grew too big, thought i would trial it outside a glasshouse and put it in a sheltered position of the front porch, sheltered position, morning sun. It declined! Moved it to my shadehouse. It declined more and then died. Your plant has declined to such a point that perhaps you should discard it and start off with a new one. These are the "weeds" of Florida, Hawaii, Queensland, Australia. They like moderate humidity, warmth, even watering, though slightly less in winter and sunlight filtered by some like shade-cloth. How can i tell you how to grow them seeing my total orchid experience is here? That is the real problem with orchid growing, you have to do some research and follow that up with some interpretation in relating what you read to your growing place(s). Even then many you try will just die....See MoreWal-mart Venus Fly Trap
Comments (41)The advice of not letting your VFT flower is always suggested because most people are not experienced or are new in growing CP, so these people barely have their VFT thriving. Flowering takes a lot of energy and if your plant is week, it can die. But if you have your plant growing very vigorously, theres no problem. I always let them flower, never had problems. When I was a beginner, of course I lost my pants until I was told to cut them off. Now I have no worries letting them flower. I had one VFT grow a flower stalk this late of the year but once I started to induce dormancy, the stalk aborted and died. That VFT is now dormant. To induce dormancy, just place it in a cool part of your house and give it less light. Now, most summer leaves will die and stop functioning, also your VFT will start to produce some smaller traps with sluggish movement if you trigger them. Those are winter leaves. Once the plant is dormant, cut down on the amount of water, just keeps its media moist to keep the bulb from drying out. I keep my dormant bulbs in a pot and simply place it in the coolest room next to a window. They will receive some sunlight but its not enough photoperiod to break their winter dormancy. I always let my VFT grow on the same media for 2 years before transplanting them on a fresh media. Or you can dig out your bulbs after it has become dormant, cut the old leaves to avoid rot, wrap it with moist LFS moss to keep the bulbs from drying out, place it in a Ziploc bag, and then put it in the fridge (not the icebox!). Always check now and then to make sure you keep the LFS moss moist but not wet and you can check on the condition of your bulb. The bulb should be white and crispy. Come spring you can plant them on fresh media to begin its new growth season. Good luck!...See MoreSpeaking of Wal-Mart
Comments (13)Way back when I was first learning to cook, thereby having to buy groceries, I made most of my choices of canned or packaged goods by the label. If it was attractive, I reasoned the product would be good; if it was blah, then the product would probably be blah also. I think GV labels are Blah, so I have by passed them. I do shop WM for other things though. MeowMix and Fresh Step are cheaper. I like Carnation Instant Breakfast in the cans, not the packets. Kroger, my fave store, doesn't carry the cans, so I get it at WM. I buy jeans, socks, etc. at WM. This past week I bought a portable mixer there. My other choice for that was KMart and they didn't have any. Anyway, I find the clerks at WMart very helpful, and they usually not only tell you where a certain item is if you ask, but will take you there. I was looking for two items, a weekly pill box and an eye cup. Couldn't find either so a clerk looked and didn't find them, so he went to the Pharmacist and told him what we were looking for and the Pharmacist said they didn't carry them, but to go to either CVS or Riteaid and they should have them. I thought that was really helpful, so I called and Riteaid has the pill box and CVS has the eye cup. I will be in town tomorrow and get them. So there are good points in all stores, as well as bad. For instance, I do not buy meat or produce at WMart. I have gotten good cakes and salads from the Deli though. Sue...See MoreCan ANYONE Identify My New Violet?
Comments (17)'Heather' Do you have the ''MySensation' one to? So you didnt know the name of your little green/white violet, and your other one to? I thought you didnt have it, and wanted it. Thats why I offered the leaves to you. The site that sells it, is $18 for a 4in pot. AND another $11 to ship it! So...$29 for this little prize!!! Guess i can go on EBay and try to get as much as possible for a few leaves:) It is still hard to get, and 'rare', according to the website that sells it....it is in slow production and is suppose to be released on St.Patricks day. But it was developed in 2015....I think, the way the site was talking about it, more odd ones are to come, and this one is only being sold VERY small amounts...thats why i asked if 'Julie He' saw more than 1 in the fresh box. I still dont know what my white with blue border is, my post is turning out to be a MySensation 'lucky finders' club! Hopefully someone will know my other ones name....See MorePoohBearLvr
