Speaking of Wal-Mart

Has anyone noticed since they started stocking mostly their brand of everything,how much prices have gone up? I buy the store brand yougurt in individual containers.They use to be round and were 40 cents apiece.They changed the container to an oval shape and package them 4 to a package stuck together,for $1.78! The containers looked bigger,I think because of the shape,but they are the same size as the round ones.I also noticed the big can of GV brand tomatoes that use to be $1.00 are now almost 50 cents higher.I bought the DelMonte brand,right beside them,for $1.00! Of course they were "on sale" so I'm sure they are getting them off the shelf to make room for the GV brand.

Like I said in a previous post, I read that WM wants to do away with most name brands. I do buy their brand in paper goods, but even then, Target is better. Yes, the prices have really gone up. I also noticed that some of the greeters (those seniors) act like you are going to steal everything. Yes, they do say bye, have a nice day but lately with grouchy looking faces. But they are real helpful when someone need an electric wheelchair and gets confused. Some are better than others, and I do admire them for working.

Yes, I have noticed the difference. It's almost like they think they're indispensable to us now so can do what they want, not what the customers want/need. I hope corporate gets their heads on straight soon.

Funny how different the walmarts can be. In south OC, they have some fancy ones. No Mc. Donald's in thoes. It feels just like a Target store. They have some things you won't find in the lower rent area walmarts. Another Walmart in a higher priced area in North OC has a beautiful garden department and the store always looks perfectly clean and well stocked. In a lower income area just 15 minutes away by freeway, the kids run wild, aisles are a mess. Shoppers crash you with their carts and the sales people look as though they're on their last nerve. It just depends on which walmart you go to.

When one WalMart is bad, do not blame all of the stores. Period! I work at a WalMart store in Oklahoma and its currently the largest Supercenter store in the state. Yes, thats right, I work in the Pets department overnight. This is a really tough decision on my work hours. I like working at nights, because it pays more, but I want to work during the day, because I want to be around more customers to teach them more about fishes. I stock the Pets department, but I do assist customers with fishes. Its a real challenge, because of right now, I am basically deaf without the use of my hearing aid and all my life, I've been wearing my hearing aid and was able to hear great as other people can, but there is a problem right now in my ear, so its tough. I can speak to people very clearly and I try to read their lips and when neccessary, I have them to write down on paper. All stores that sells fish are bound to have a dead fish here and there... thats perfectly normal. One night, this customer was an idiot, actually very rude somewhat. He wanted the entire tank of a specific fish that cost 5, 10, or 15 cents each (cant remember at the moment), so I went ahead to net out all of the fishes, but let one fish in the tank, because it had some kind of fungus. I told him that the one fish is bad. I went ahead to prepare the fishes into the bag and while I was doing that, he went ahead and netted the sick fish out and I tried to tell him, but he wouldnt listen and he put the sick fish in the bag. I went ahead to tie up the bag and note the price and amount of fishes, but I did not add the sick fish to the total price. While I was doing that, he went ahead to net up 4 dollars worth of goldfishes that costs 15 cents each and I told him that I will do that. He wouldnt listen and by the time he was finished, I prepared the fishes into the bag and then he went and got some more and put it in the bag. I tried to count the fishes in total and estimated it to be 50 fishes, which came to about $7.50. He wouldnt listen to me and he wanted things his way. There was this one night, I spent nearly an hour educating a lady on fishes and tank care. She ended up on picking two fancy goldfish and the alage eater that sticks to the tank glass. After everything was done, about an hour or so later, when I walked by the fish tanks, I noticed two bags in the sink. I was shocked, she changed her mind at the checkout. Made me furious. Its alot of stress a fishes to net them out and bag them. Another night, this guy wanted several fishes, which was divided up into two bags. After all was done, he came back about 15 minutes later, saying the prices on the bags came off, so I wrote it on the bags again. Later that night, my coworker brought the two bags back and dumped the fishes back into the tank. What is wrong with these customers?! Anywayz, I still work there and I still enjoy educating people on fishes and tank care. Just because there is a lazy associate at a store, the entire company should not be blamed. Its very simple to talk with the store manager about whatever. PetsMart is a good place and they have much more selections. WalMart is good, but not enough selections. Petsmart is generally more expensive but there are some fishes here and there thats cheaper than WalMart. There are PetCo stores in this state, but I have no clue where they are. I've seen commericals, but they failed to show the locations of the stores. So, I have no clue about PetCo. Anywayz, all of these stores sell good and healthy fishes with top technology fish tanks. It all comes down to the services of each associates for each stores.

For the most part, the WalMart that came to our town has been good for the other small stores. With the distances people have to drive to do large scale shopping around here, often in excess of 50 to 100 miles, having a large store like WalMart offers an incentive for many people to come here instead of driving a little further to a much larger town. Without WalMart, many of our other small stores would probably already be out of business, even if some of them don't realize it. Also, before Canada enacted their protectionist taxes, up to as much as 14% I believe, on materials purchased in the USA and taken across the border, many Canadians also came here to shop because we had more variety here. Much lower prices on cigarettes and alcohol as well. Now they stay home rather than being punished for looking for a better price on things they want. However, I have also seen that much of their home town rhetoric is just that, rhetoric. We don't seem to get much cooperation from WalMart when looking for assistance in local charity activities. While those demonized oil companies and related industries, like Halliburton, freely donate thousands of dollars per year to local charity causes, WalMart seems hard pressed to offer a toaster as a donation.

I told DH about this, and he also thought it was really cool. The first time I had a KTer visit my home (in 2001), DH was concerned that a "stranger" was coming here. She was terrific, and since then, he gets excited when we are meeting KTers. I've met quite a few, and they have all been wonderful people. Our Nita (The KT Queen) has met well over 100 KTers--and she has never had a bad word to say about any of them. Not an axe murderer in the lot!

Be aware of the new labels too, they all look alike so its easy to get confused. I accidentally bought the salad dressing instead of the GV mayo and its horrible. Too late to return after opening the jar, I did it a second time I noticed it on the receipt so I took that one back. Yes the prices are going up and the name brands are even higher, they got you where they want you. I try to shop the sales at other stores.

I seldom shop there simply because it's not convenient. But I've had occasions to go in there 6-8 times in the last 6 months or so and a couple times thought I'd get a few things while I was there. My usual result shopping Walmart is bring a list of 10 items and I'm lucky to get 6 of them. But I picked up a few staples like razor blades, deodorant, Ibuprofen, etc. Thought they should be cheaper, right? Wrong. I was in Target and they were nearly 30Â¢ per blade cheaper, much cheaper on the other stuff. Then a week later, Target had the blades on clearance! Oh well, now I have plenty of blades. Walgreens is cheaper on SunSations automatic dishwasher detergent than Malwart's Great Value brand. I used to buy the powdered Great Value laundry detergent but now I buy Tide cheaper so there's no incentive there. Haven't been a Target fan for decades but I'm becoming more of one now. And I get some real bargains on the clearance stuff at Target.

Like with all generics, you need to watch the prices. It's not unusual for a "brand" name to be cheaper.

What I find really humorous is how many people I see scoff at Aldi. But they scarf up the Great Value brand at Walmart! So 'splain that to me, huh Lucy?

DDIL shops at Target occasionally but the last 2 times she was there she said the checkers and other employees were rude.Maybe it was the wrong time of the month or something but she thought it strange.Last time she said she wasn't going back.LOL

I've never enjoyed shopping at Wal-Mart, but since it is a 25 mile trip into the city where there is more choice, I do shop there. We have a Family Dollar, a Dollar General, a great hardware store and a good grocery, so basically I buy jeans, t-shirts and underwear at Wal-Mart. The clerks at the Wal-Mart are very helpful and nice, but it's a small town and if they are rude, their momma will hear about it!
Lillipad, tell your daughter-in-law to inform the manager about rude employees. There is no need for her to stop shopping at a store because the employees are rude. Better to get rid of the rude employees and keep the customers!

I have been getting my prescriptions filled at the wonderful "Wally-World" but got something in the mail that said Medco would be filling the generic brands for the same price walmart does. At least I think that's what it said. Hubby threw it out before I had a chance to go back and read it more thoroughly. I am not a big Walmart fan.

The prices from one Walmart to another can vary greatly. A cube of Pepsi can be 5.98 at one store and 3 miles away it could be 7.49 at another.

We recently got a new Walmart in a nearby town that plans to carry only carry merchandise that is a top seller at nearby Walmarts.

I actually like the super Walmart 30 minutes away. It's clean, has friendly workers,well stocked shelves and is open 24/7.

I have noticed things like Great Value canned goods have gone up but the names brands in the markets have also gone up.

I love it! Wal-Mart, after trying to eliminate the competition, is now competing with itself! "We recently got a new Wal-Mart...that plans to carry only merchandise that is a top seller at nearby Wal-Marts." I wish them the same success that they had with the mom-and-pop locally owned stores!

and yet the fish food i buy is a large sized container, while at target, the same price, is the small can..go figure!

oh and a cyber pal's hours have been cut to the point she was going to apply for pt unemployment...no wonder the greeters are grumpy!

Wal-Mart has gone up on a lot prices. I did a price comparison last summer and they were higher on a lot of prices than the competition.

As far as generics go, I've tried several brands. I like some and I don't like others. I like most of the GV, but I've found a few I don't like. Some items have changed quality like green beans. I'm not an Aldi fan, but the green beans were good the second time I tried them. The first time, they had a couple of stems in the can. The canned spinach had some stem in it too.

Way back when I was first learning to cook, thereby having to buy groceries, I made most of my choices of canned or packaged goods by the label. If it was attractive, I reasoned the product would be good; if it was blah, then the product would probably be blah also.

I think GV labels are Blah, so I have by passed them.

I do shop WM for other things though. MeowMix and Fresh Step are cheaper. I like Carnation Instant Breakfast in the cans, not the packets. Kroger, my fave store, doesn't carry the cans, so I get it at WM. I buy jeans, socks, etc. at WM. This past week I bought a portable mixer there. My other choice for that was KMart and they didn't have any.

Anyway, I find the clerks at WMart very helpful, and they usually not only tell you where a certain item is if you ask, but will take you there.

I was looking for two items, a weekly pill box and an eye cup. Couldn't find either so a clerk looked and didn't find them, so he went to the Pharmacist and told him what we were looking for and the Pharmacist said they didn't carry them, but to go to either CVS or Riteaid and they should have them. I thought that was really helpful, so I called and Riteaid has the pill box and CVS has the eye cup.

I will be in town tomorrow and get them.

So there are good points in all stores, as well as bad. For instance, I do not buy meat or produce at WMart. I have gotten good cakes and salads from the Deli though.
