Grandmother's Hat
Comments (43)Most of the selling at Celebration (hey, that rhymes!) is done by vendors, and other than Vintage, I don't know which vendors will be there. I know that the local HRG group is going to have a "Miriam's Corner," where they will be selling some roses, but I don't know which roses. We're usually around the membership tables, and Gold Coast HRG sponsors a Silent Auction but to be honest I don't at this point know what roses we will be auctioning. We'll have Grandmother's Hats to sell at the Cemetery's Open Garden tho (Sacramento) I DO know that. Jeri...See MoreArchduke Charles versus Grandmother's Hat
Comments (7)Have you ever smelled Grandmothers Hat? or are you drawn to her because of her fragrant reputation? I love both roses, but I have learned not to buy a rose that I have never seen grown, and smelled, locally under my conditions, I have always been disappointed by them. -I consider this: How much time do I spend smelling a certain rose, versus How much time I spend looking at a rosebush? I see Archduke Charles and am delighted by it more than 200 days of the year (taking winter into consideration) I pick a rose from the most fragrant rose in my garden perhaps once a week x 12 weeks out of the year when it is in bloom. Although I find the quality of the scent of Grandmothers' Hat to be superb, I can only give it 4 to 5 out of 10 for strength, while Archduke Charles is c. 2 to 3 for strength of scent, out of 10. with its' own light but really lovely scent, of mixed floral, with a deep middle scent note and with a hint of cherry blossom cologne which gives the fragrance a lift, on its' finish. I keep my most fragrant roses by my porch where I am most likely to pick one and smell it (along with the wafting roses, including R. moschata) Those fragrant roses I grow further away, or are out of my daily sight-line I am less likely to smell as often. Another condieration that I would have is how many years did it take for your Archduke Charles to reach its' size? For me a mature sized China or Tea is a great treasure as they typically build growth, sloooowwwwly. That's my experience. Let us know, please what you decide. Comments (5)Well, because of the heat wave (record-breaking temps in S.F.), I didn't feel much like working out of doors today! However, with this rare blast of heat in my chilly garden, I can practically see my roses growing as I watch. Thank you all for your comments. I still can't seem to make a decision about what to put where. I've been thinking of putting Maggie next to Buff Beauty. I'm now wishing I'd placed Grandmother's Hat closer to Buff Beauty and might then place WR Smith on her right. (I'm thinking just now mostly in terms of color and contrast.) I forgot to mention that I also have Dd Brabant, another possibility, but I think for now I'm going to keep the teas in containers. The real problem is that my garden space is so very very small. At this point, I have to hope that my roses don't grow very fast. Also, I'd read today that WR Smith is OK with being cut back to limit his size. Ingrid, do you find W.R. Smith to be very fragrant? I've read contrasting notes about that on HMF. And I do like Lady Ann Kidwell. I can live with the nodding. Because of the limitations on my space and my climate, I am just overjoyed if my roses bloom! I tolerate a lot of things that make others SP a rose. For instance, we have rampant black spot here. And a lot of hungry rose slug action. So I often have a lot of pretty sad looking foliage. But -- the plants keep refoliating and seem overall healthy, so I just don't let it bother me. Jeri, I bought Grandmother's Hat last fall, all because of you, and am I ever glad! She is doing GREAT for me. She shot up to @ 5 feet very quickly, has had two lovely flushes thus far and is about to have another. She's been growing like mad this past month and has many new shoots and fat buds. Thank you so much for bringing her to my attention. Another fan here. Buff Beauty is growing in front of the chain link fence. She's really putting out some growth right now. She's my oldest rose in the ground -- I think it's 4 years now. It took til this year for her to finally take off, and I had my first wonderful flushes of blooms. So far no giant canes, and she's pretty stiff, but I will run her along the fence if possible. I love this rose. Vaporvac, was Maggie slow to bloom for you? I've been reading that she may not bloom for a long time, until she's reached most of her height. Also, I'd read that she is fairly shade-tolerant, so you may not need to give her your best sun, if that's in short supply, as it is for me. Except for this weekend, where the cool gray S.F. fog belt is getting a serious lesson in HOT! Sheba...See MoreGrandmother's Hat not looking so great --
Comments (19)Ingrid, I do agree! I have learned so much here. I don't think I'd even have roses if not for you-all, and I know I wouldn't have rose babies that I've propagated myself! Grandma Update: You know how you can have a chronic malady and you keep delaying a trip to the doctor, and then the day of your appointment, the malady mysteriously -- resolves? You don't? Well, you know how for weeks and weeks your hair will look like the dog's breakfast, and then you finally get an appointment at the hair salon and are all excited, and you wake up the morning of your appointment and your hair is PERFECT?? That's -- sort of what happened this evening. I went out to water the roses and my gosh, what a surprise, I found that Grandma is suddenly pushing out lots more leaflets and some farther down the stems, and canes that (I thought) two days ago were showing NO life actually are showing many tiny little pink and green tips. AND there was a big fat gorgeous open bloom, and another small one. Gram's foliage still looks pallid, and yes, her legs are bare a good ways up, but things look far less bleak. I did bend and tie out some canes and branches so they're not all just shooting up vertically. I will keep a closer eye on Grandma and remember to keep up with the nutrition and extra water. Hopefully, she'll green up and maybe there will be a new basal one of these days. But at least I can see that she's not in a complete free-fall now. Thanks much to everyone for the very helpful information and advice today. Sheba...See MorePlumeria Girl (Florida ,9b)
