Where to put towel bars and robe hook
I'm at the very end of my master bath remodel. The last thing I need to figure out is where to hang my towels and robes. There will be a free-standing tub with about 5 inches clearance on both sides. The shower glass will be all the way to the ceiling.
1. I was thinking of a square towel ring between the mirrors.
2. For bath towels maybe 30" bars between the tub and full wall; maybe stacked two high???
3. I have seen pictures of a hook on the outer edge of the halfwall to hang a towel while in the shower.
4. No idea where to hang robes.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

5 years agoThe sink and tub faucets are square and the bathroom has clean lines so whatever I choose needs to be similar. I was originally considering a floor towel stand but wanted to keep the floor as clean as possible. The coat rack is an interesting idea.

Comments (20)I realize this is an old post, but from personal experience (and I am not speaking necessarily about children) hooks are very plausible as a) they prevent over stacking b) gives the towels a chance to dry c) actually can look tidier as there is no need to fold/drape d) also purposeful for hanging a bathrobe or your clothes while bathing or even a small bathmat if floor space is tight. That said; for easy hanging of large bath sheets due to their length; I have sewn on a colour co-ordinated loop (double fold cotton bias tape found in the sewing notions) about mid way down on one side. Re style; just ensure you choose a hook that has a reasonable projection and has some sort of a stopper at its end and experiment with its spacing if using more than one. Comments (19)We are planning to use hooks in our new home. I'm thinking of either bear hooks - one of our bathrooms is going to be "barely a bathroom" or wooden pegs. They will be big enough to easily hold a bath towel...Our other bathroom will have an outhouse/forest theme, so hooks/pegs related to that will work..and in an "outhouse", pegs will be very appropriate. Casual. We are building a log home, so the more casual hooks will work well for us. Besides, it seems like no matter how much time I spend hanging towels on bars, they always look a bit untidy. At least hanging them on pegs - they always like they are supposed to be casual.. I hope everything dries well...it's just my dh and me, so we don't have a lot of wet towels. Comments (12)My towels dry just fine on hooks. I use some cute micro dot towels from JCpenny. They are just the right thickness for us and dry quickly. I would put two hooks on the wall next to the tub and each boy would be assigned a different color towel. ): If you have 24 to 36 inches of wall space, you have room for two hooks. Comments (10)I mixed it up for different reasons. Master bath: hooks near shower & tub for bath towels, rings for hand towels @ sink. I'm really, really, really loving the hooks for the bath towels. I used double hooks, and I like that I can drape a towel over both "prongs" to help open it up for drying. Don't actually take the hand towels off the ring unless I'm swapping them for clean ones, so the rings are fine. Guest bath: towel bar at sit-in shower for bath towels, smaller towel bar at sink for hand towels. This was more of a space issue. It was a very typical "galley" type bathroom layout. I went with double towel rods so that each guest (generally my parents) could have two towels without taking up the entire wall. Hooks would have worked, too, but I wanted to be able to fold them over something and free up some wall space. The shorter towel bar at the vanity allowed space for two guest hand towels to reside on one wall, without taking up counter space. Half bath: Open ring for hand towel (because it was the best looking option that came in my faucet's line, and I wanted them to match). :) Hollywood bath (DD's): No towel bar, rings for hand towels. Her shower area is small and the only wall that would fit a towel bar is the wall the door opens up against. I didn't want to have to choose between open door or dry towels. Instead of a mounted towel ring, I'd go with a countertop model -- you won't have to reach as far, and it seems more appropriate for this particular spot. Do note whether the models you consider are for hand towels or fingertip towels -- the sizes are slightly different.

Yes, this looks like the obvious spot, but instead of stacked bars, which could look "clutter-y", I'd go with a double bar.
If the shower wall were a little higher, I'd say one on the shower wall /one on the exterior wall.
If you go with the double-rod, I'd add a train rack for some towel storage over the toilet -- I don't see a whole lot of storage in this bathroom, and this would provide some "balance" on the other side of the room.

You can get hooks that hang onto a glass wall with suction. I chose this picture because it shows items hanging ... but they have more attractive examples made of stainless steel instead of plastic.
4. No idea where to hang robes.
Are you installing a shower door (and a shower door's going to be a bit awkward no matter which direction it hinges)? If the answer is no, you could place a hook on the upper bitty wall area .. or you could hang a robe hook near the tub /by the window.
You could have a towel hook on the pony wall, though now that I reconsider, I think you'd be prone to catching your leg on the hook and hurting yourself.
Last thought: Not to be unkind, but you know the saying, If you can't be a good example, at least be a cautionary tale. It would've been wise to consider these placements earlier in the design stage.

5 years agoNot using a designer, I did fail to think about the small details. Originally I was going to install a heated towel ladder on the outside wall but decided against. I attached a photo on how I thinking of stacking the bath towels. Plus if I stock the towels like this, maybe it wouldn't look odd hanging towels right next to them.
To the right of the sinks is a pocket door but I still could mount a towel bar but this would be far from the left sink, that's why I wanted to put the ring between the mirrors.
They just measured for the shower glass and told me I can do a towel bar handle on the 32" wide door. I don't know if I would want to break up the look of the glass with a bar.
Friday is the last day of construction (shower glass 2 weeks); backsplash, faucets and tub. hopefully it will be a little easier to picture placement once everything is in.

5 years agoYesterday was the contractor’s last day; installed backsplash, tub and faucets. The towel ring and TP holder was in stock so put them up, towel bars and robe hooks on order. Here are some quick photos.

Grab a command hook from the hardware store and put it up where you think you may want to hang a robe. Try adding another where you think it would also be useful. Then you can change the location if need be and live with it for a bit before you drill holes for the real thing.
