Cracks In Trunk of Red Maple

I have a Red Maple that is probably 70 or more years old according to previous owners of my house. It's not in a picture from the late 1930s/early 1940s. The tree isn't real tall. but is full and rounded, to the point that the area around the base of the tree for 15-20 feet doesn't get a lot of water. In the past few years some of the branches have started to show some die off. This winter I've noticed a crack that is visible from both sides of the trunk (I don't know why one photo (east) posted vertically and clear while the other (west) stayed horizontal)

My question is whether I should start looking at the tree as nearing the end of it's life and thinking of taking it down if it looks poor this spring/summer, or if it will probably be just fine. If it comes down it will not land on any buildings, just the fence in the picture.

Thanks,
