Comments (5)will try for pix tomorrow --in meantime, just heavy snows, which we've had before. no temp records. tree was planted to overhang small pond that was installed before we bought house. pond was cemented in, but cement developed several cracks. had pond refitted last year, so that about 1/3 of root system is no longer getting water -- getting plenty of water from remaining 2/3. plenty of leaves on branches and twigs overhanging pond. other change in microclimate was large branch from overhanging tree fell last winter. red maple now getting more sun....See MoreJapanese maple bark has splits

Comments (5)Oh, my. This does look like something scraped the bark. Almost every maple I have, of any variety, has developed what looks like vertical cracks in the bark. Some have developed what looks like mower damage at the base. (NO, no mowers in my gardens.) Anyway, I'd come to realize the vertical stuff is normal, but not this, I don't think. You're tree eventually will die from it and it's simply caused from poor efforts by nurserymen (and homeowners) who don't inspect root systems when they're dug/potted/planted. 20 year Red Maple falling could kill someone or do serious damage to structures.
