Veggie Tales - January 2019
Comments (1286)Tony - I haven’t placed my order yet, but those peppers aren’t tempting me. Maybe that carrot though. I saw it when I was perusing the site earlier. Kevin - My order included a couple bags of Promix, some 1020 trays and the 32 cell insert and a couple humidity domes. I’ve been doing seeds now for 9 years since my mother’s death and I have been using her previously used supplies all this time. I decided it was time I buy a few fresh ones. Was getting tired of finding holes in my trays. Those things happen after so many years of use. ;-/ Also picked up some netting that I hope will keep the birds off of the strawberries and then later the peach trees. A few other things that I can’t think of at the moment. The pelleted lettuce seed that I started 2 days ago has sprouted. :-)...See MoreVeggie Tales - June 2019
Comments (601)Cindy, we have relocated 2 chipmunks this weekend...never just one of them either. Hope your strawberries are safe for now. Coons seem to be more wary and harder to catch. Fortunately, we don't seem to have many around...or they just have not found us yet! Looks like we are in for a week of hot and muggy weather. It should get the tomatoes, peppers, and squash growing better. I hope to get out early tomorrow and get some fertilizer on them. I may look for something the use on the tomatoes for fungus...this week looks ripe for that. Usually I don't spray but I have a feeling it might be good to do this year if I want my plants to produce for any length of time....See MoreVeggie Tales - November 2019
Comments (348)I’ve received a Pine Tree Seeds and a High Mowing catalog so far. I’m hoping to order from Seeds of Italy this year. The only cool weather crops I plan to do this year are greens and potatoes (potatoes are really a summer crop around here, growing most of the summer, since I grow for storage...). Sun is just too limited in the early spring and fall. Summer crops do very well on my plot because of this, as my garden ranges from 6 hours to even 12 hours all summer long, but full shade by Oct. 1! The reason is that our property is bordered by a thick southern tree line. The sun remains good until it sinks just low enough, which is when it abruptly leaves!! I plan to grow lots of tomatoes....And I’m aiming for a 5lb per plant harvest goal from my taters this year. I met my 3lb goal this last year....I have a couple hundred pounds of potatoes in our crawl space haha. Margi, I’m pretty happy with the boots. I broke them in pretty well today, exploring the creek way out behind my aunt’s....My cousins and I traversed the bluffs, creeks, explored under some of the little country bridges, etc. I don’t know if I could wear a cheap pair of boots again....I treated them with beeswax this morning and any rain today mostly beaded up and ran off the boots. Dry feet! Normally my feet would be sopping wet in the rain....I love the high arch and heel of the logging/fireman style boot. It supports my feet so well. I’ve always struggled to find a shoe that fits my feet....See MoreVeggie Tales - December 2019
Comments (445)Happy New Year to you also, Margi! And Happy New Year’s Eve to everyone! An update on the microgreens I started on Sunday. One of these is Johnn'y Spicy mix and the other is a Mild Mix (I added some red amaranth to both of them) And I started a few lettuces (I can't remember the variety right now) I have been trying Espoma's seed-starting mix. It seems to work well, but it has some larger chunks of composted material and isn't as fine as some of the other mixes. I have decided to follow in the footsteps of the rest of you and pick up a container of ProMix in a couple of weeks to use for some things. I still go back to Jiffy Pods for a lot of my seed-starting needs though. I know a lot of people hate them, but they are so convenient and work well for me. I'm at work for half a day today, then I am off for the Holiday....See MoreLen NW 7a
