What Size Rug for my Living Room?

Hello!

We are looking to purchase an area rug to go in our living room. We are considering the following rug:

We are having an issue deciding between the 6'7"x9'6" and the 7'10" and 10'10". Some dimensions of our room are:

Sectional is approximately 118"x86"
Length from edge of section to back of arm chair is approximately 152"
Width from front of couch (non-chaise part) to front of media unit is 82"
Behind the arm chair is just about 6 feet of open space (in front of stairs and a window). We wan't to keep this space as open as possible for future use.

Concerns:

How to place a rug around a media unit (does the rug go under or end X amount of inches in front?)
We may move a small end unit (depth 12") in front of the chaise portion of the section against the wall (can the rug go under this or should it end before the unit and by how much?)

Any help would be appreciated! We are just starting to decorate our space!

It's good to have the rug connect the pieces in the seating group. The most common way to do that is to have the front 1/3 or so of the front legs sit on the rug.

Something like so:

You can use painters tape to map it out on the floor. That will give a good measurement.

Thanks! This leans me more towards the smaller rug. It won't be as close to the media unit as in your outline (still ~1 foot away) but we could maybe put less than 1/3 of the rug under the couch.

Don't go overboard with the acryllic. There is plenty of it already. Remember the purpose of a "coffee" table is a place to set down your coffee cup. Therefore, I think it should have more substance than acryllic so your room doesn't look like a show room for an acryllic manufacturer. I wouldn't mind if it matched the silver sofa table either. Center it with the FP, and draw the seating to it. I think once your seating is gathered around the coffee table, the navy bench will fit nicely at the window, behind the two chairs. The 8 x 10 looks fine to me. I'm sure you have seen this graphic before (see below), you don't even need to put the entire sofa on the rug if you want to go a little bit smaller. Consider just the front legs of the sofa on the area rug like the middle sketch shows below

Welcome to my world! I have a condo with lots of openings and very little light. Your rug needs to be big enough to be under your entire seating arrangement. A ceiling light does no one any favors in the living room. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. If the kids need another surface for toys or games, get a round upholstered flat top ottoman with a large shallow tray for the top. To compensate for the lack of light, when you get your lights, get lamp bases that are mirrored. If you are in the market for accessories or wall decor, be sure to get lots of reflective surfaces (mirrored frames, mirrors, etc.). Also, stick to light and bright colors.
