These seem extremely expensive. I just finished a remodel and replaced my interior doors with solid and they weren't that expensive. I don't have the exact figures because I started with a wood door but had the interior replaced with lamina insets and then my cabinet maker installed decorative molding. He also stained and finished them to a wood color that better complemented the rest of the cabinetry in my condo.

I had looked at Trustile doors but on the advice of my designer, I purchased from Urban Doors. Even with the Lamina inset, these feel extremely solid and block out sound really well - I had to hole up in my bedroom several days while construction pandemonium was proceeding around me in a relatively small space and it was relatively quiet in there and the sound level rose precipitously when the door was open.

The cost to spray the doors seems very high. Once a good spray guy gets setup they could spray all those doors in about 30 minutes a coat. Are you certain that cost is just to spray the doors, are they installing them, knocking out the hinges and mounting hardware?

What king of "Hollow Core" doors is he using that he would use multiple coats of lacquer? As to costs and the HD prices you are finding it is impossible to judge anything as your info is much too limited.

You're not doing painted doors?

+1 real wood. Even if it works for few years, in the end it will expand and warp with moisture changes, you also have to be careful when applying paints as it can and will warp right there and then.

What ^^^^^^^^? Real wood has been used forever for doors with no issues.

Agree, if the solid wood doors are properly sealed/finished there are no problems at all.

user1980 userlast - The installation charge seems in line. It's that finishing cost of $600 - $700 per door. For 15 doors that's $9,000 - $10,500 just to paint them, You could get someone to paint your entire house including the doors for that price or even less.

The house we bought had all the hollow core doors damaged by the former owner. We replaced 27 doors for $125 per door for solid, primed, MDF doors. The painters removed them to the driveway to paint them white.

If you are looking for solid wood, stain grade, doors, those will cost a lot more. I can't imagine anyone using lacquer these days. Varnish is much more standard. I once made the mistake of lacquering a floor. The dirty secret of lacquer is that it does not like modern cleaning agents. Someone put alcohol in the mop water and melted the finish to a gummy goo.

We purchased 12 interior doors in October 2018. Solid wood, shaker, square top, pre-hung, I don't recall (and cannot tell from the invoice if they were bare wood or primed). Price: $183.95 each. Total with tax: $2,398.17. Purchased from local lumber company. The drywall people/painters installed the doors, including hardware. I can't remember the exact amount, but at first it was significantly higher than a Lowes or Home Depot install, and when we pointed that out, they came down to whatever the install amount would have been from a big box. So add that amount, whatever it is for you locally, to the $2,398.17, plus door levers (we purchased those separately, I believe it was around $500 total for door levers (about half locking, half closet). The paint job was phenomenal and was included with their quote for our whole interior paint.

I have masonite doors to my patio and really dislike them! We live in Vancouver Canada and our patio doors expand and contract so much that we are continually adjusting them and sanding the top to get them to shut. I will always buy reall wood, I know what to expect at least..

I live in a 70 year old house. All doors are solid wood. Do they stick sometimes? Yes, but only because of the number of times one door in particular has been painted (by previous owners). My handyman did a bit of planing, I primed and repainted, and no more sticking door.

Most people run some sort of HVAC all the time these days. They have a furnace with a built-in humidifier running all winter, and the AC which removes humidity in the summer. There are a few weeks in the fall and spring with nothing running, but they are not going to cause ones doors to all go crazy. And many people don't even open windows then.

If they don't want to see you solid wood doors, it's probably because they don't actually have them. If I were replacing a door, I'd go to a local planing mill and have mine built.

Your GC is trying to EXTREMELY RIP YOU OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And is probably trying to totally rip you off everywhere else in this renovation! If you haven't signed a contract, I would walk away and get several quotes on what you want done. The GC is trying to make ALLOT of money by doing VERY little!!!!!! Normal these days unfortunately!!!! It seems everything(most) these days are scams. Because people aren't educated on scams even with the internet.
