If you can do this with the pedestal base, that's the way to do it. It's fast, easy, makes the (front loading, I'm assuming) washer and dryer so much easier to use, and gives you some storage.

They are pricey though.

A less expensive solution is to build a single base for both the washer and dryer like this one, for example.

I would call a plumber and have the gas pipe relocated. Reclaim the floor space.

Personally, I would avoid stacking. You need to be able to easily move the W & D so you can clean the dryer vent...something that should be done once a year.

I actually really enjoy having stacked washer and dryer. Much better space utilization. But I realize that this is a charged topic. Lots of people have strong opinions about this. In the end, it probably depends a lot on the specifics of your space.

I do agree though, that asking a plumber to relocate the hookups is a great option. It'll admittedly cost you a few hundred dollars up front, and money might be tight with all the other relocation expenses. But in the end, a "proper" solution is always preferable over a band-aid improvised solution. And realistically, it's really not that difficult to move a connection. Get a couple of quotes. There probably are plumbers who want to establish a working relationship with a new home-owner and who are willing to cut you a good deal.

While you are at it, consider installing an automatic water shut-off valve that reduces the risk of a surprise water leak.

Thanks a bunch for all the great tips and suggestions. Relocating the hookup sounds like a great option and is certainly something I haven't considered. I am leaning towards this unless it's cost prohibitive.

I'd only do #2 if the pedestals were movable after the appliances were sitting on them. I wouldn't want to lift the appliances on and off the pedestals if they required service. If that's not possible, then I'd get the pedestals sold by the manufacturer if they also solved the gas line clearance problem. Or move the gas line as someone else suggested.

If possible,I would also ask the plumber to mount it up higher in the wall, not far below the A/C power receptacle for the gas dryer. That makes it much easier to connect the gas lines than the connections that are mounted near floor level.
