Concrete pier block in finished basement hallway, ideas?

Bill Cooke

Hello Houzz community,

We're working on updating our 1970s split-level and have found a few... oddities. One of them is a concrete pier block visible in the downstairs hallway. We've been replacing the carpet with vinyl tile and all the old doors with new and updating the trim.

One question that is stumping me - how do I make this look somehow better than it does? Since it's below a load-bearing beam I don't plan on moving it or chopping it down. I think having trim on top of it would look odd, but anything will be better than it currently is.

Thanks!
