Dark hardwood vs lighter hardwood floors
Comments (61)When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time....See MoreHelp with Hardwood Color Selection (Engineered Hardwood)
Comments (30)Thank you HerrProfessorDoktor, I am glad you are letting others know about the issues you are having. It is too bad you regret the dark, perhaps you could restain them lighter in the future? I am very fortunate as I have had dark hard wood floors in my last house and plan to install them again in this house. I love the look and had no regrets last time with care so I think I will be okay. However, I do think it is wise of you to post as there are others who may not know the challenges of dark hardwood floors looking pristine. A rumba is always is a nice little feature to help with much of the dust. ~boxer Here is a great link / poll that talks about this topic. Comments (8)A home's flooring (wood either solid or engineered) should last 20 -100 years (depending on the product, wear layer and quality). Purchasing a floor sight-unseen (there is always time for samples) from the LOW END of the building material industry (LL is NOTORIOUS for bad products....Floor & Decor aren't much better) is a disaster waiting to happen. If you cannot see it, don't buy it. Imagine the NIGHTMARE of purchasing tens of thousands of dollars worth of flooring (including cost of demolition, subfloor prep, underlay and wood flooring) only to discover you HATE it. Or worse...it is the WRONG surface for your home and you have to remove it within 3 - 5 years. On Houzz, and as a flooring professional, I've seen this time and time and time again. The headaches begin when you rush something like this. If you can't have wood installed before you move in, then bite the bullet and wait it out. It will save you THOUSANDS of dollars of mistakes. And picking a $4.99/sf hardwood from LL today can turn into a $12/sf nightmare in three months. Honestly I suggest you do NOT do it. And to be clear, please do NOT purchase anything from LL or F&D. They are the LOW-END points of sale with plenty of nasty product. You need to understand your family's needs, wants, EXPECTATIONS (my oh my do you need to know your expectations), the HOUSE'S ability to handle hardwood and your LOCATION'S ability to handle hardwoods. Choosing blind for a house you have NEVER lived in from LOW-END retailers sounds like another job for Mike Holmes to 'Make it Right'. Did I mention it is a BAD IDEA? Please listen to the houzzers who have been there before you. I've seen hundreds of thousands of square feet of hardwood ripped out because the homeowners rushed their decision before they knew ENOUGH about everything listed above (including their own expectations). Time is something all of us have right now. Use it properly. You will be glad you did....See MoreWhich new hardwood floor should I choose?
Comments (10)The gray stain on the doors/trim is pink (when shown against the new options). The darker floors throw more GRAY into the air = the doors look grayer than they actually are. As soon as you take away the dark gray, you will notice how pink your doors actually are. I'm sorry but the best way to get this to work is to REVERSE the colour scheme. That means dark(er) doors with LIGHTER floors....See MoreRelated Professionals
