Is a LA degree/license overkill for contracting
Comments (4)The degree itself is not a magic bullet that will gain clients for you. In addition to it you would need to be a good designer, so you would need the basics -- what school can teach -- and also to develop a sense of good taste and effective solutions ... much of what you will teach yourself by observation. I can only speak from my own experience about the LA degree program, but for me it was weak regarding the business aspects (in spite of the fact that it was a 5-year program.) You might learn more about the business end while on the job. Many LA graduates have unrealistic expectations about how things are constructed in the field, so there is a great benefit from gaining experience at a lower level and working one's way up (including getting paid for it along the way!) Much depends upon your temperament and proclivities. As in all fields, you'll be successful if you are well suited to the work. The degree will probably help you advance farther, especially regarding hardscape capabilities. It might help you get there faster, but offers no real guaranty of success and requires the up-front investment in effort (and ca$h!) Speaking only for myself, by the time I graduated, I wished that I had opted instead for working my way up within a company and gaining field experience along the way. I think it would have been more fun, rewarding and educational. Even after graduating, you'll start at an entry-level position....See MorePantry overkill
Comments (10)Good decision on keeping the 30", I'll bet down the road you'll relish 'the little bit extra' it provides. I got a giggle from a few of your comments..not being a "gourmet", "living close to the store" and "only being two" of you. I don't know why it struck me funny. My many chef, cook & "gourmet" friends, all operate on a pretty streamlined kitchen, items do double (..triple,quadruple)duty. They don't have a gadget to seed a Cucumber- instead they use the tip of a spoon! I'm single and live down the street from the grocery..I want to spend as little time there as possible.. It makes my head hurt- the parking lot, kids screaming and begging for every item they can, its congested and poorly laid out...I would much rather go to my spacious pantry and pull out exactly what I need. For fresh produce- I will gladly go "producing" as often as needed. Also, It may just be the two of you- but you're putting great thought (and I'm sure $) into a kitchen redo- that's why you're here! People don't overhaul kitchens on a whim- In the back of your mind, ask Is it possible someone else would appreciate having that for their needs and lifestyle? Sometimes the little things make a big difference. I think you'll love your new pantry!...See MoreOverkill to buy both a Vitamix and a food processor?
Comments (27)"I do worry about the high calorie count of smoothies, though, which is part of why we only buy them infrequently." The major advantage to making your own is you control the ingredients. Start with a non fat greek yogurt, add half a frozen banana and frozen strawberries for a great, low fat, healthy smoothie. I regret I didn't have my blentec when my girls were eating purees, but now that they are older (school age), I find the smoothies even more important because it ensures they eat wholesome, healthy foods. If you look at the Sneaky Chef or Seinfeld cookbooks, you can get alot of ideas for adding purees to food. Your Au Gratin sounds divine. If it will peel the spuds, I will go buy the cuisinart food processor today. LOL!...See MoreHow do I pack cuttings for mailing?
Comments (0)Sharing cuttings is a wonderful way to economically try new roses. This can be done at any time of the year, but shipping is not recommended when temperatures are above 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Take cuttings that are no longer than the width of a gallon baggie. It is courteous to make a slanted cut on the bottom and a straight cut at the top, to ensure that the recipient knows which end to root. If possible, try to make the bottom cut between leaf nodes, so the recipient can make a fresh cut if necessary. Remove a few of the lower sets of leaves. Bundle the cuttings up, and wrap the bottoms in damp paper towels. When shipping hardwood (dormant) cuttings, the "jellyroll method" can ensure fresher cuttings. Lay the damp paper towel flat, arrange the cuttings on the paper towel about an inch apart, then starting at one end, roll the paper towel up. Put your bundle of cuttings in bottom of a gallon sized plastic baggie. Roll the baggie up, pressing out any extra air. Zip up the baggie. Make sure to label the cuttings. Use a waterproof marker to write the name on the baggie. Place the baggies in a cardboard box. Use as small a box as is possible to keep the shipping cost down, but make sure the cuttings can fit in the box without bending or smashing them. Use crumbled newspaper to fill in any extra space, this will keep the cuttings from being battered on their journey. The USPS will provide Priority shipping boxes free of charge, these can be ordered online, or sometimes they are available at your local post office. Priority shipping generally takes between 2-4 days to deliver, but this is not guaranteed. The insurance the USPS offers won't cover live plants, but delivery confirmation is only a few cents more, and is a good way to ensure prompt shipping. Submitted by Jeanne...See Moreamylou321
