Wooden Utensils
Comments (14)Yup, have a crock or three. I also have a lot of silicone spatulas of various sizes and shapes. Also plenty of wooden spoons and my favorite pasta fork is the wooden one. I have been waiting for years for the pegs to fall out because I always notice how the glue sort of bulges or looks soft after I use it, but it's still going strong. I have a stainless steel one too that is waiting in the wings, just in case. My very favorite wooden spoon is a fairly large rather thick one that has a point on one side and a hole in the middle. That baby can stir some stiff stuff like bread dough without fazing it. My favorite frying spatulas though are the old wooden handles thin spatulas with slots. They don't make them that thin anymore. They're so easy to maneuver in tight spaces for turning things over. We love our toaster/bagel tongs. No more burnt fingers and they can really fish things out that were really too small to be put in the toaster. Andie I'm wondering how the dog gets those spoons. Smiles. Counter surfing? Comments (3)I love Little John. I'm actually smitten with most of their irises, since I love that orchid color. That combo was pure mistake and it was magic, Irisgal. I doubt it will ever do that again. Renee...See MoreWhat's with wooden spoons?
Comments (39)Love the bamboo spoons. They are a very hard wood and last for years and years. I hand wash all my wooden spoons, maple, olive wood(which is so beautiful) and my old cheapies. The makers of the coated and baked in non-stick pots and pans have been recommending wood or silicone utensils for years. Metal scratches and dings the surfaces of the pans and mars the finish (Also don't use Pam spray on the pans either. Some chemical in the spray will make the non-stick properties break down and wreck the pan). NancyLouise...See MoreQuick soup ideas and late late arriving winter
Comments (22)Awesome spoons. Here's a link to my favorite soup featuring kale. http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-chicken-soup-with-kale-131067 Kale and Chicken Stew Serves 6-8 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 5 medium mixed potatoes; diced (I used Yukon gold, red and purple) 1 teaspoon fresh thyme 4 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt freshly cracked black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion; chopped 1 large shallot; minced 2 carrots; peeled and diced 6 cups chicken stock 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese; finely grated 5 cups chopped kale 15-ounce can cannellini beans; drained salt and pepper to taste Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place the chicken breasts on a sheet pan. Rub with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. In a separate sheet pan, toss the potatoes with olive oil, thyme, salt and pepper. Roast for 35 to 40 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and the potatoes are tender. When the chicken is cool enough to handle, shred the meat. Cover and set aside. Warm the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and shallot and sauté, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Add the carrots and cook 15 minutes until softened. Add in chicken stock, thyme, chicken, potatoes, Parmesan, salt and pepper bring to a simmer. Add the kale and beans and simmer for another 20 minutes, until the kale is tender and the beans are hot. Lpink's note: I don't roast the chicken and potatoes ahead of time. I saute them in EVOO and then just cook them along with everything else....See Morelizbeth-gardener
