Rule of thumb for island pendant size?
Comments (12)Thanks for keeping up with me Beekeeperswife! I did check out Redroze's kitchen and her pendants are 10" wide and 27" long vs these ones which are 12" wide and 32" long. My DH is worried that they will be too big for both the island and the kitchen. Our island is about a foot shorter than Redroze's but it is about 1 1/2' wider. Also our kitchen is smaller (10'4" by 15 for the working area). If you include the eating area it is 22' x 15. I think I may need to go just slightly smaller. The problem is that I love this particular pendant because it is a little more modern than any of the other lantern style pendants that I have seen....See MorePro's Rule of thumb size of Pendant light to size of Kitchen Island??

Comments (8)Ideally, you will want the space between each pendant to be the same as the width or diameter of each fixture. For example, if you have 18 inch pendants, the space between each fixture should be 18 inches. This rule of thumb remains true, even if the pendants are hung at staggering heights. To determine the appropriate size of your kitchen island pendants, follow the steps below: Measure the length and width of your table, kitchen island, counter, bar, or desk in feet. Subtract 12 inches (or 1 foot) from each of these measurements to ensure there is 6 inches of clearance on all sides of the fixture. Take the remaining measurements in feet and add them together. This number is the approximate width allowable of each pendant. To determine the allowable number of pendants over your desired surface, take the length of your table and minus 12 inches and then divide by any number under the maximum allowable width (as determined in the previous step) and divide by two. This number is the approximate number of pendants that you could hang over your kitchen island, dining room table, or counter-height bar. So I'm getting 18 inches is a good size. But my math may be off...See Morehelp with pendant lighting/fixture size!
Comments (2)There are some good rules of thumb for this that you can google - I also suggest blowing up balloons to approx the size pendant you are interested in and hanging them from ribbon at the correct length, then live with that for a few days to see if the scale is right, whether it blocks anything in your line of sight, etc.....See MoreAnne Duke
