How would you decorate this awkward space?
Comments (17)Oh, great ideas! I have some fairlylarge paintings I'm not using, but they are all landscape orientated, not portrait. I have a very large mirror - blfenton, I'm usually the first one to say "mirror is a canvas, whatever it reflects is the art on it" -- so what would I be reflecting? The "formal dining room" (turned home office) and DH pounding away on his keyboard. :) I like the idea of a trunk. I have one that is just sitting somewhere, but it's not large enough (think more the size that you'd keep to the side of a sofa). I will have to keep my eyes open. Do I use faux greenery - yes. A lot. Do I like to admit it? No. Do I really think anyone really believes I keep that pothos perfectly green in a bathroom with no natural light? No. :) Lazy Susans are very 80s to me...but so are tv trays and I certainly have a stash of them! Functionality knows no decade boundaries. :) I saw some interesting candleholders at TJ Maxx today in colors that would go with my overall decor very well. Not exactly the right style, but probably about as close as I will get. I'm finicky. :(...See MoreWhat "art" would you hang on these entry-way walls?
Comments (33)How about some elegant black iron scroll work? There are scads of varieties and they are often the perfect solution for a wall that needs that certain "something". (The photos are from my home.) I recommend choosing art that a) reflects your interests and b) makes you happy every time you see it. You said you can't your hang travel visas and martinis, but why not? You could frame your travel visas and arrange them under a large matte. For the martinis, you could either buy a painting or print of them or literally frame some martini classes in a shadow box. You might also consider vintage travel posters from places you love or that you've already been to. Your home is very nice!...See MoreHow would you furnish/ decorate this space?
Comments (37)I love your home and your style. I agree with @tibbrix that you should avoid layering a rug over your current carpeting. Our house was carpeted when we first moved in, and I was determined to use all our Persian rugs etc - but it just didn't work (either visually or functionally.) I also agree with all the advice to place or mount the TV on the brick - it looks squished in the corner and the brick seems like the right spot. Since you're open to buying new furniture and since you have a great room with a big sectional, I'd consider trying something that is explicitly differentiated from your current living room. Maybe skip the sofa for a some big comfy easy chairs (or swivel chairs) with a round coffee table in the center? Comments (1)I would find a warm-colored rug to soften all the cold-looking tile. From this one view it's difficult to see this area clearly. Could you please post more pictures? I'm afraid that large and heavy-looking mirror is out of proportion to the more delicate console beneath it. The photos and basket underneath also don't seem right....See MoreButternut
