Oh dear the dreaded ledge decor dilemma. The mirror seems like the easiest thing to dust, lol. Those spaces always drive me nutty.

Something big like a large trunk or some overscaled baskets would be my choice, if that fits your decor.

I convinced one client to eliminate these by drywalling them up.

I'd put a large painting there. Really big- quilt size. Find a local artist to do it for you - you provide an inspirational pic. Not all art is hard to do and if you stretch it yourself- not that expensive. Or have them do it on a board. How about a Wolf Kahn copycat?

I like the large trunk idea... if there is room put a piece of art or a mirror above it. Good luck!!!

I don't know but if you do put up a mirror you'll have reflection from the chandelier to contend with as well. Good or bad - don't know.

My vote is for a large piece of art. I would not specify a mirror because it will reflect the light or blank wall (I imagine).

i saw one in a home we were viewing with large candle holders, About 3' tall, the size you'd put on the floor and a large urn sitting on a trunk with tall curly sticks. It looked very nice.

I would find something unique and interesting like an old tapestry, a stained glass window, some framed designer glass, a large framed picture or even a wood art piece, whatever will work with your decor and extend it from the ceiling instead of on the wall. I've seen what I'm thinking of done to create some inexpensive dividers on a few of the HGTV shows, and think something like that would look cool up there. Sorry, I'm not very good at describing what I'm thinking and can't find a picture of it either.

I saw something once that was interesting. The couple was fairly traveled, and they'd picked up a ceremonial kimono somewhere. They had it framed there under glass - it was a stunning introduction into their very artsy home. So someone's suggestion was close..... Good luck!

Oh, great ideas! I have some fairlylarge paintings I'm not using, but they are all landscape orientated, not portrait.

I have a very large mirror - blfenton, I'm usually the first one to say "mirror is a canvas, whatever it reflects is the art on it" -- so what would I be reflecting? The "formal dining room" (turned home office) and DH pounding away on his keyboard. :)

I like the idea of a trunk. I have one that is just sitting somewhere, but it's not large enough (think more the size that you'd keep to the side of a sofa). I will have to keep my eyes open.

Do I use faux greenery - yes. A lot. Do I like to admit it? No. Do I really think anyone really believes I keep that pothos perfectly green in a bathroom with no natural light? No. :)

Lazy Susans are very 80s to me...but so are tv trays and I certainly have a stash of them! Functionality knows no decade boundaries. :)

I saw some interesting candleholders at TJ Maxx today in colors that would go with my overall decor very well. Not exactly the right style, but probably about as close as I will get.

I forgot my add-on question. Do you guys think I _need_ a portrait oriented picture there, or do you think a properly scaled landscape one would be ok? I do have a landscape one I LOVE but haven't yet found a place to hang in this house... I'd be tickled to have it up again.

The art doesn't matter the size does. You need something at least 6' high and correspondingly wide.

Yowzer, that's going to be hard to find! I will keep my eyes open though. The piece I was thinking of is about 3' x 4.5'. I can ehance the width, but the height - nothing I can think of.

You could put a chunky, big vase next to it and fill with tall curly willow or other tall sticks to get more height. I'd try it anyway but a big piece has presence, drama and just looks like it was made for the spot instead of piecemeal.

a)wood trunk with two matching artworks in a medium size -- hang in a vertical row.

b)Trio of large chunky candlesticks in white with white candles.

c)wicker type trunk with large vertical artwork on wall

d)((gasp gasp gasp)) yep. large vase with silk greenery. ((gasp))

e) vertical tapestry or fabric-based artwork

f)vertical metal artwork

I would wall paper the back wall of it in a beautiful paper with birch trees and then paint the lower half chocolate brown and to the left of the flat part I'd put a huge bowl of wooden bowl of pine cones and that's it. Not expensive and will look really nice.
