I agree. the furniture layout for the tv is horrible that way.

you could try moving the sofa back against the wall and centering the tv on that wall (I'd wall mount it (not too high)

ignore this gray chair as that's where the entrance to your kitchen would be. could this layout work?

the only place for the correct layout and tv viewing is by the FP. you could do a built in next to the FP for the tv, but you say you don't want it to be a focal point.

If that's the case, then you may have to move the tv elsewhere.

You've got a lot of unused space! The current layout is not the most optimal for the space. Although I don't love TV above fireplace, it really is the best option for your room size and space.

You need to provide dimensions for any advice to be realistic. Everyone has opinions and you need to find what's right for you! When I work with a client, we work through what your needs are, furniture layout and selection based on size and dimensions, not just style. a Sofa can be 78" wide all the way to 108",.... that is a huge difference!

I would just make two seating areas, . then put the tv on the wall left of the kitchen entry.

Also, do you need a library room? could you put the TV in there? Since either way its not really veiw-able from the kitchen. what are the room dimensions?

truth be told this room needed better planing in the building or remodeling phase. should have had that "plan" a little more thought out as the room is long and narrow. The tv on that wall will catch a mega glare with the windows and door behind it. also the door needs to be fully accessible

Either back to back seating or a different room for your media would be a better solution. You could also do a 4-chair group at the FP and a 3-seat sofa and two chairs at the TV, but that isn't the ideal location for it.

Thanks for all the replies. I think we are leaning on mounting TV to the left of the large window/doors and then doing a sectional across from that (pushed back against wall). That way it wouldn’t be visible from the kitchen, follows the shape of the walls maximizing space, and still leaves enough room to have a seating area in front of fp. How does that sound? Additionally, would it be weird to have light switches underneath the mounted tv? Really don’t want to move all the switches to another wall. Thoughts? Thanks again!

Light switches under the TV really make it seems like a after thought.

The tv will be on the same wall as the window so trying to look at it when the suns out seems terrible. Furniture really needs to float in this room, not be backed up to walls.

Not sure how a sectional will help it would have to be pretty long and which way would it face? how does that make the fireplace the focal point? against the wall? you have a door way on nearly every wall so that will also appear to be an after thought.

Most people want to see the tv from the kitchen so I'm not sure that's really an issue.

Seriously think about using the library as the the "media room" that includes all types of media if you will.

Sorry if it sounds harsh just trying to make you see that in this room it would be hard enough to use all the space without a tv.

Thank you for your responses! We are considering each option carefully. We do not want to use the library room as our main media room (it is a smaller room, not suitable for entertaining and is isolated from the kitchen).

After realizing the negatives of our previous TV placement, we are now (reluctantly) open to mounting the TV over the fireplace (preferably with removing the mantel so the TV would not be mounted so high). We are also exploring the idea of mounting the TV on the wall with the sliding glass door, to the right. We would use a swivel mount so the TV, while in use, would essentially be in the left corner of the fireplace. What are your thoughts on that? With the TV in that position, do you think a sectional will be too heavy in the middle of the room, in front of the fireplace? We want an option that will be comfortable, suitable for entertaining and good for kids.

sectionals are not good for entertaining, people cant look at each other and often have to sit right next to each other in a row. They are more for family lounging IMO. I still think you will need more than one area in this room or find a way to back things up.

I dont like TV over the fireplace either, I really dont. But in your case it's the best resolve. you could do shelving on either side of the FP to make it more thought out.

Couch and two swivel chairs in that area would be my go to. Maybe you could do a game table in the back half... or something.

Put the tv over the fireplace! Ok, so everyone is going to say NO!!! And after you jump through hoops to make this room make sense and it never will just do it! It’s not your fault; they build houses with fireplaces with no consideration to how people really live there lives! How they have to place their furniture and that we all live with tv’s ! This room is long enough that you can sit back far enough!

Besides, who wants a tv on the opposite side of all those windows!

We really appreciate your input! We are going with the TV over the fireplace and a sofa with two armchairs in the right hand side. Would you recommend a sofa the same length as the fireplace (that would be 96inches long)? We found a company that we can customize the length. Also, would you recommend a chaise on the left side to help balance out the two arm chairs on the right?

My husband brought up the idea of a pull down mount above the fireplace, such as the one here

Tape the furniture patterns on the floor. The fireplace is a long distance from the kitchen.

I like the idea of mounting to the left of the glass doors.

Put cabinets or shelves on either side of the fireplace, put a similar console under the tv. Float a sofa (not to big and not a sectional) facing the tv.

Chairs that swivel from sofa to tv give you more flexibility and are better for entertaining. Your existing chairs can sit on either side of the fireplace. Rug under sofa and complementary smaller rug in front of fireplace will define the areas. Put a small, low coffee table in front of the fireplace.

I wouldn’t put the tv over the fireplace. The furniture you will have to put in front will take up the space you need for walking between outside and the library. That would be too much going on.

Put solar shades over the glass doors if you are worried about light.

Now, if you don’t have a place for a kitchen table elsewhere or are entertaining board game players, then put a round table and chairs near the kitchen and the sitting area near the fireplace with the fireplace mounted tv ( make sure you have a way on that fireplace to hide wires and manage heat).

And, move the light switches - a little electrical, dry wall and paint is a small price to pay.
