Comments (10)Yes, they should come down over the top part of the window. In fact, they should come down the same measurement as the depth. IOW, if the rod projects out 3 1/2", they should cover 3 1/2" of the window. If it projects out 5 1/2", they should cover 5 1/2", and so forth. They generally won't come out that far unless they're over panels tho. Only valances over some windows is acceptable. For the most part, if you have 8ft. walls, 12" and sometimes 14" length valances is standard, depending on how much space is between the ceiling and top of the window and where it's mounted. Add 2" to that for 10ft, 4" for 12ft. That's why it's important to measure first before deciding the length. It's really about proportion.
