How well does Jubilee Celebration perform for you?
Comments (2)She's a beauty, isn't she! Jubilee Celebration I love her blooms, but in my garden, she has been a bit of a disappointment. The good news is that there are a couple other posters on this forum who claim she does well for them, so hopefully you will hear from them also. In the meantime, here is my less than glowing report about JC which I've had for about 7 years in my garden: From the beginning she was something of a wimp--no vigor, not really unhealthy, but kind of a weakling, no strong growth, too "delicate" appearing. She just never has really taken off and I often think she needs an extra shot of vitamins or something. About her third or fourth year, I tried doctoring her with everything I could think of--she got somewhat better--a bit more vigorous and greener and more fulsome looking, but not a lot. That was the best she ever did, though she began looking more "permanent" after her fifth year. I don't think she ever got over 2.5 x 2.5. Quite a bit smaller than Austin lists in his catalog. She has never burst into lots of blooms, but typically produces 3-10 blooms, occasionally more during the spring bloom. She does have a fairly good re-bloom rate, so there are often at least a few blooms on her bush most of the time. And the blooms are beautiful! Unfortunately, the blooms are not long-lasting. If it rains, they will collapse rather quickly. In the burning hot sun, the edges burn. If you can, definitely place her where she gets some protection from the hot afternoon sun. Oh yes--she does have a bit of the droopy neck syndrome that a number of Austins feature. Lovely droop--but sometimes I have to get down really low to take a decent picture of her blooms. She is not a disease-magnet, but she often suffers from a low-grade BS infection. I spray her a couple times in the spring and one or two times in the fall, and she gets by with that, but she never looks completely clean if you get up close and look at her closely. Is she a keeper? Well, I've been keeping her for quite some time now and have no intention of getting rid of her--but she is a disappointment in some respects. But her blooms are beautiful--lovely pink/peach/salmon shades with yellow at the base! And her re-bloom rate is good. Her two best features. Actually I love her--but still want to put an extra sweater on her when she goes out to play--just in case. Kate...See MoreCheck out this Jubilee Celebration bloom
Comments (12)Kad2, yes this happened to my Evelyn just this year, there was another bud on that cane but it yellowed and fell off :( The rest of the bush had 'normal' Evelyn blooms. I marked that cane, anyway, and hope to see more buds coming from it. I really liked that half and half look of the bloom. Please keep us posted when you get more blooms on that cane. I like rose mutations!...See MoreHappy Chappy, Distant Drums, Jubilee Celebration & others ....
Comments (7)Iris Gal, Happy Chappy is not weepy for me yet, I'm hoping by next year it will be, the blooms last a really long time, JC is such a great rose too, my plant is covered in blooms right now. Thank you Kathy, it's such a lovely compliment coming from you, because you always take such gorgeous pictures. I'm really happy I got Happy Chappy and JC - both great roses - I got HC for my mom too - she loves it as well - will definetely post more pictures of both :o) msjam, thanks - got more roses blooming now so I'll head out and take pictures soon - got two huge buds on Bewitched, I don't get blooms often on this plant but when it does oh boy - wow! I love this rose, hope it does better next year. aprille...See MoreJubilee Celebration or The Endeavour?
Comments (5)Only grow The Endeavour, so can't compare. Jubilee Celebration's caught my interest repeatedly, but I've yet to encounter it in person. In the 2016 USA Austin catalog, The Endeavour's been moved to the Supplementary English Roses list, page 56, which seems to precede dropping a rose from availability, while Jubilee Celebration remains with the general offerings on page 29. Since a full page photo of massed Jubilee Celebration appears opposite The Endeavour listing, I'm best guessing The Endeavour is scheduled soon to be "superceded" by JC. It may be one of the roses Austin's requiring be dropped as a condition of continued licensing. My original was purchased locally as a grafted & potted Weeks' rose some years (8?) ago. The graft showed signs of punking out two years back, following a typical lifespan of Huey grafted roses in this garden. Unwilling to do without TE, ordered a gallon own root then from Heirloom, who no longer carries it on their website. (Dug & deep potted the failing grafted to encourage own rooting in hopes of saving the scion & luckily that worked. Grows equally well own root here.) So if you're interested in The Endeavour, you may want to get one while the getting's good. http://www.davidaustinroses.com/american/showrose.asp?showr=4342 I'm continually wowed by The Endeavour, rating the fragrance an 8 out of 10. Rapid repeat bloom continuity, each flower lasting well with multiple shadings that morph enchantingly from bud to petal fall, as if a new rose each day. The blooms open on the salmon side of coral pink, with tints of amber & apricot that increase as the flower expands & then becomes overlaid with lavender, unique & exquisite. Tend to be larger here than HMF's average, easily 4-5", though the bush has only grown 3.5' tall & wide without pruning. Short, thin thorns, sparsely spaced, so good near a walkway where it doesn't snag passersby. Powerful fragrance to my nose, like a fine French perfume, rosey with notes of narcissus & sandalwood & hints of gingery cardamom. Nose deep in a blossom, feel suspended in time. Parentage listed as seedling x seedling, suspect Aloha '49 somewhere in its background. Rarely spots on lower leaves only & when those are removed, new ones grow back cleanly in this no spray hot & humid garden. Appreciates a bit more in the groceries department, loves the heat of Summer yet continues to bloom in the cool days & cold nights of Autumn, petals unfazed by frequent rain (though nod when soaked), grows in a graceful leafy bush form. Semi glossy leaves, not the matte that HMF reports. Searching the forum for The Endeavour posts, found this one where Marina/the_dark_lady compares it to Jubilee Celebration. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/1605970/austins-the-endeavor?n=9 Marina has photos on HMF of both roses & hers of The Endeavour look like mine. http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.41588&tab=36&qn=1&qc=0 Compare those with her pics of Jubilee Celebration. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.37260&tab=36&qn=12&qc=0 More photos of Jubilee Celebration from this forum. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/3841321/please-post-pics-of-your-jubilee-celebration-rose...See Morebayarea_girl_z10a_ca
