Check out this Jubilee Celebration bloom

I apologize for the poor picture quality (and the fact that something has munched on it) but I have Jubilee Celebration new this year and one of the canes so far has put out 2 flowers that are divided neatly in half (a little hard to see from this angle). One half is yellow and the other is pink...right down to the petal that is on the dividing line...Will the rest of the buds on this cane do the same? Always something interesting in the garden!

Interesting and unusual--not the least bit like my new Jubilee Celebration which has bloomed several times now and managed to evenly blend those colors--no division. Perhaps it is because your plant is new and hasnt completely settled in yet. I look forward to seeing what the more mature blooms will look like. Please keep us posted.

Aprille, thank's for the pics of my new fave. I love that color on it and the scent. Your pics show it off perfectly. It's always a guessing game, how big David Austin roses are going to get. I thought when I planted it, that instead of the 4 by 4 description, it would get to 6 by 6, or more in California, but all reports on this site, are that it stays compact. Go figure!!! Well lucky for me, I have it growing in a 20 by 20 pot, placed on a garden table. It's a cool rose to have for sure!!!

The Endeavour's done very well through hot humid summers & freeze-thaw winters for 8 years now in central VA, where blackspot pressure is very high. Planted by the steps of the front porch, this rose catches my eye multiple times a day. Very rarely over the years have I seen a single leaf beginning to spot, stripped & trashed the entire leaflet. That's pretty much it for fungal control in this no spray garden, so have to agree with Austin's assessment of "very healthy" on this one in regard to blackspot in this garden. Mildew is an occasional fleeting problem here solved with plain water hose spray, and I've not seen this rose affected. I'm still enchanted by this rose in every way. Very willing to bloom in rapid repeat with snap deadheading, large old style flowers up to 5", mostly in clusters, that open slowly as they expand, lasting in full bloom a week in heat & longer in cool, with other buds opening in staggered sprays, so by the time the first flush is waning, the next is right behind. Blooms begin warm salmon pink with amber undertones, transforming daily with infusions of apricot & peach till finally overlaid with dusty lavender. The petals show a silky sheen & the flowers are exquisite, as is the deeply satisfying old rose & fruit salad complex perfume. This rose is grafted, yet shows a graceful slightly arching vase shape 3' high & wide. An own root twin is scheduled to arrive this Spring & take its place at the other side of the steps. Will be the only Austin duplicate here, an indication of how highly I value this rose. A heart-throbber! Seldom take the camera to the garden, so unfortunately have no pics to share. All of your photos convinced me to rectify that this year! Marina's portraits at HMF capture the beauty of this rose before it attains a blend of hues. I appreciate you all soooo much; I have been stalking this forum for awhile for information on which Austins to "invest" in!! LOL! I don't like to admit how many roses I have and have had, mostly David Austins. My kids are finally gone, probably shouldn't admit that because I dearly love them, but I actually can garden again!! Just counted and I seem to have 25 roses at present. I thought I was a poor gardener for many years, which may have been true because I was always carting girls to sports things, but I have realized after reading this forum, perhaps the older DA's which I had, weren't as prolific and did get BS. I am an organic gardener and the roses have to be disease resistant, lovely and have a delicious fragrance. My zone is 8 (PNW), this is why I finally am "reaching out" because I saw a post from someone else from here!! This year I ordered an obscene amount of digested manure ( a wonderful way to reduce toxins from cows if anyone hasn't heard of it). My roses never looked this good!! Even though I have tried premixed and mixing up my own organic foods for years. I also supplement with Hendrikus Bloom. Ok, long winded response to poster from PNW, I have Boscobel and Jubilee Celebration, both of which are blooming beautifully, yes JC is nodding but I agree with others that she just needs to get older! Both plants are grafted because I didn't want to wait another year since I just expanded my garden. I noticed the original leaves from the nursery plant have BS but the new leaves are very healthy with no BS or mildew. New also is Scepter d'Isle which is gorgeous. I have had the best luck here with Golden Celebration (not Graham Thomas, gets BS), Mary Rose, Lilian Austin (took years to actually rebloom quickly), Lady Emma Hamilton, Evelyn, Winchester Cathedral (white Mary Rose) and Abraham Darby ( this is the first year he has bloomed his heart out without disease, I think it's payback for the digested manure!!). I've had mine over 4-5 years and it is still a relative shorty--2.5 to 3 ft at most. I attributed that to winter kill--that maybe it wasn't quite as cold hardy as most of my other Austins. As for soil, I've always assumed mine is "average" since my hydrangeas tend to bloom both pinkish-lavender as well as bluish. Whatever the soil, my Jubilee Celebration also tends a bit towards the chlorotic look. Some blackspot problems, but not real bad. Somewhat weak necks--blooms nod a bit. Blooms and re-blooms fairly quickly--but I wouldn't object if it were a bit more floriferous. What it has going for it is the most beautiful blooms--love the yellow at the base of the petals. Looking forward to seeing your pics when your JC starts blooming. Kate

Well...some buds have opened on a different cane and they are fine...

I have so more buds ready to open on the cane that has put out the bicolored blooms so it will be interesting to see...

This gives a whole new meaning to bi-color. I would buy this rose if every bloom looked the way the first ones did! Can't wait to hear what the rest of the blooms do on that cane.

Kad2, I do not want to hi-jack your post but I had similar experience with my Evelyn. The bloom looked like this

Dark Lady...That is very pretty! Did this just happen to your Evelyn this year? Are all the blooms the same on that cane? Part of the charm of English Roses I guess. I saw an earlier thread on Winchester Cathedral and Mary Rose reverting back and forth although I guess this is different. Anyway, I am still waiting for more buds to open on that cane...

Kad2, yes this happened to my Evelyn just this year, there was another bud on that cane but it yellowed and fell off :(
The rest of the bush had 'normal' Evelyn blooms. I marked that cane, anyway, and hope to see more buds coming from it. I really liked that half and half look of the bloom.

Please keep us posted when you get more blooms on that cane. I like rose mutations!

It would have been interesting to try to grow seed from that bicolor rose. Perhaps some of the seedlings would have the two colors throughout.

Well unfortunately there were just the two blooms and then the rest of the buds on that cane were normal. Strange! Dark Lady did your cane put out anymore bicolor blooms? Hoe_hoe_ hoe...I do not know much about propagating roses from seeds...

It is called a sport mutation and it is usually the branch that has the mutation. I have had it on my Fair Bianca. Some people don't like it and cut off the branch. I thought it was cool so I kept it.
