Which breakfast table should I keep?
Comments (15)Wow - didn't expect it to be so unanimous! lobotome - yes, the high backs for these chairs have always bugged me. They are also very uncomfortable and, as I mentioned, kind of falling apart. I would definitely try to find replacement chairs at the very least. I'm not sure if the schoolhouse ones would match though - they seem to call for a more clean-lined table, no? Just to be absolutely sure, let me post some closeup pics of my current set, so you can see why I've been thinking of replacing it. Yes, the set was $3000 new, but it seems to be kind of crappily built. It was the first real piece of furniture that dh and I ever picked out at real furniture store (as opposed to the salvation army), and I guess I didn't know what to look for. Now I'd probably raise heck if they delivered something that looked like this to me, but back then, I just assumed that was the way it was supposed to be. As I said, this is a mexican distressed pine table. They seem to have used quite a bit of wood putty in the construction. All of the things you'll see in these pics have been there since new (except for the green stain - that was courtesy of one of my kiddos!) So here's the closeups: Wood putty holding leg together (ignore the half-naked doll on the chair - oops!): Wood putty holding other leg together (all those yellow splotches are putty): The distressed tabletop includes lot of cracks that have gotten worse over time. Makes it almost impossible to write at the table without using a notebook or clipboard as a writing surface. And oh, yeah, the green stain (watercolor paints from one of my kids): It's hard to think of getting rid of the table because it does hold a lot of memories and it is really cool looking. But the top has become such a pain in the butt with the kids' homework - I can't count how many times they've put a pencil through their paper because they hit a crack or dent under the place they were writing. And all those little dents catch every single crumb - it's really hard to get them out unless you vacuum it (yes, I've been known to vaccum my table, LOL!) I do think a round table would work very well for us - ideally I'd like to find one with a similar style to the new chairs (clean shaker-type lines). But all I can find are big oak pedestal tables with lion paw feet or ones with big swirly empire feet. I don't think either quite goes with my kitchen. Any suggestions for a round table that might work? I'm thinking at least 48", maybe as big as 60" in diameter....See MoreBed: Paint or Sell?
Comments (26)Ajc9 - all of the quilts, shams and duvet are from TJ Maxx or Marshall's. Usually the only place I ever buy bedding. The bedskirt is Martha Stewart from Macy's which I would never recommend to anyone in a million years! Color fade began as soon as I put it on the bed. Putting on and taking off any bedskirt is a real pain let alone one on a bed w/ a king memory foam matttress. By the time I got around to wash it, it had faded from Aqua to nearly white. It still makes me want to spit when I think about it! Well I could tell DH was not really on the bed bandwagon. Pitched the suggetsion and he said "I really like our bed, but whatever you want to do will be fine w/ me. I'll be happy either way." Why do I bother? LOL! It has been suggested to me in the past to slip it. I really didn't want to break out my sewing machine but I'm really liking the suggestions of slipping it as well as getting a new frame (looking at one on CL for $15) and using the footboard as a headboard. I've thought about slipping it a few times but I would still have had the height and then it would end up blocking a window. The only 2 places for my bed are in front of the window. Washability is of utmost concern to me so I think I may try checking out dropcloths. SHoot - if I can draw a straight line and sew a straight line, how hard can it be?! I just bought this bedding: Source: google.com via Tiffani on Pinterest...See MoreSellers - Keep Your Power & $, Refuse to Sell for Lower Price !
Comments (54)That speaks to the importance of equity, doesn't it? When you go to sell, equity is everything. People really go out on a limb when they take on a home where their expenses to maintain it max them out. And, if the market isn't appreciating, then the only equity they are building is what they are putting toward their principle. We all know that after a year of making large payments, you might own the doorknobs. Equity is the only portion of your home investment you have some liquidity with. How many of you who have purchased homes in the last ten years took out a conventional loan and put at least five percent down on your homes? How many have built up equity and then used it up with a Heloc, or refinanced because you bit off more than you could chew comfortably? I find it really scary to see the constant ads and billboards urging people to use the equity in their homes for debt consolidation. I also get uncomfortable when I see some of those shows on home improvement channels where an expert comes in to appraise a home's worth so that the owners can feel free to use up that cushion to spend more money on their homes and feel "safe" doing it. If and when they do use it up, their homes revert a more expensive home needing to bring more on the market to just meet the debt. I am nearing retirement. I have gambled on real estate for a long time now in a modest manner, but the whole goal in the game has always been to increase the equity I have in my property(ies). It has allowed me to work at a job I like, when so many of my friends who are as old or older than I "can't afford to quit" a job they dislike because they keep spending their equity like it were somebody else's money....See MoreRattan Sectional ( keep or SELL)
Comments (21)My vote goes to keep this. It's a classic without any of the beachy/porchy cliche'd aspects. I'd consider sending this piece out for re-upholstery prior to your move to be covered in a sophisticated neutral linen fabric for relocation in a sunroom or a spare bedroom/ office space in your new home if you'll have one. Let this replace a guest bed. No need to have a "museum" guest bedroom space that goes largely unused in our homes any more. If you're moving nearby enough to have the sofa picked up at your present home before the movers come and delivered when finished to your new home, you're way ahead of the game. This piece is a real space saver and perfectly fine to be made up for an overnight guest's use by removing the back cushions for the night and making it up comfortably with coordinating sheets, a duvet and pillows. Afterward it's back to duty as a comfortable seating option in a study. This would be a very expensive piece to replace if you let this get away, so I vote for renew and re-purpose. The glass tables are dated now and wouldn't really be worth your time and money to transfer to your new home. Take your time and find something to take their place when the budget permits....See MoreBeth H. :
