Help with resizing children's clothing patterns

I'm a relative sewing beginner and have been making some outfits for my grandson based on old McCalls style patterns. However I've needed to make them for a 6 year old boy and the patterns only go up to age 4.

So I've tried to increase the size but have found it much harder than expected.

Any tips to make the process easier (I don't have my grandson at hand very often to try the outfits on whilst I'm making them)

It is much harder than one would think. The best thing to do would be to have his parents take some measurements and buy a current pattern that reflects those measurements. I've sewn for 50 years and I wouldn't attempt to grade patterns (changing them from one size to another) For instance, his chest measurement might be two inches bigger than a 4 year old, but certainly his neck *won't be,* and those two things have to be combined. Little kids' bodies change, too. A toddler pattern (can go up to 4T) is shorter, and sized to accommodate a diaper. Children's sized patterns are taller, maybe a touch slimmer, and labeled without the T.

They could send you clothing that fits, and you can try to adjust the patterns to match the clothing.

Why not just buy a new pattern? a See and sew pattern is $2.99, but even a full priced pattern would more than save the cost of wasted fabric for something that doesn't fit. Patterns are almost always in sale someplace.

I would make a pattern from scratch rather than grade one to fit, 90% of the time.

You said 'old' McCalls patterns...I agree with c t's advice above. Patterns evolve with the body changes in generations. If, for instance, you would wear a size 12 dress today, an old pattern might be labeled 'size 12' but would be too small and proportioned wrong for today's size 12 person. I'm fairly sure that children's patterns have evolved in size over the years. You might resize the old patterns with the child's body measurements to help you. Fabric is too expensive today to make mistakes when cutting. JMO.

I have a couple of patterns for a mother and child indian dolls. One is called Navajo Indians and the other is Plains Indians. They are from World Friends. The childrens outfits fit an 8" doll. Outside..the salesperson I started with is 5"11 !! She buys all her clothes there as well as the other sales women who were my height and then mid height so it is a clothing line it seems for all. They carry 1X 2X etc as well as Misses and Petites. cyn ...I was surprised that the blue print shirt I got is Viscose. I was sure it was real silk. The skirts are heavy and lined. Very luxurious fabric and heft to the weave. I was a little concerned at the cost of the items....admittedly if it had been running gear I would have not batted an eye LOL...and I know they are not what some on the forum think of as expensive clothes at all ....but to me they are pricey, but boy the fabric feels so rich. The colors are also so intense. They also are easy care . I am going to baby them but the salespersons said you don't need to. Good Luck and enjoy ! c

I would nix the mirror. Change the window to treatments kids cannot reach (roller shades/valances worked wonderfully) Remove the closet door put a piece of wood across the bottom. Perfect toy box..no lid to fuss with/danger of banging, easy clean up. A bi-fold might work better for that space and you can then close it. Two rods since the clothes are so short would give you twice the hanging room. I agree shelves for knick knack or your use UP HIGH. Changing table to the right of the bathroom door. With two little ones in the same room maybe you don't rock for late night wake ups? If you would a glider would fit in the corner to the right of the window. A dimmer on the light switch works instead of dangerous lamps. I am not sure how much other space you have. When my three were little play space was our living room/dining room..not so much in bedrooms. I liked to keep an eye on them. So even though the room is filling up maybe you don't NEED floor space if they play elsewhere? Be sure any wall decor you hand is up high enough kids cannot reach them. I made a stuffed wall sculpture (Noah's Ark) that I attached with velcro. I could hand an animal to the baby while I changed diaper and then quick put it back on the wall when done. If you put a dresser in be sure the hardware cannot become a lift for climbing. You are living the best time of your life!!!

Thank for your ideas and feedback.
One of the reasons I looked at old patterns was for the traditional and cute designs.
Today’s boys clothing is just so baggy and sporty and not as formal smart and cute as it use to be.
It makes complete sense that times and body shapes change and proportions differ with age.
I’ve tried making patterns from scratch before by basing on existing garments with differing success.
Can anyone recommend a pattern supplier for smart formal clothing.

Often, it's the fabric that makes the difference between casual and formal. I would not call the outfit pictured a formal one.

I would search for 'classic' or 'heirloom' sewing patterns, such as Martha Pullen or Children's Corner. Here's a good place to start: http://www.heirloomsewingforchildren.com/pattern_index.htm
