How Successful Was Your Clothes-Dying Experience(s)?
Comments (4)Well, I have a black wedding dress (a short two-piece brocade), thanks to the yellow candle wax spilled on it during the great blackout of 1965. But that dye job was done professionally. My cousin recently used Rit to dye a pair of jeans black, and that worked well. I've had experience dyeing wool (in fact, that's my project for today), but those dyes aren't the kind one finds in the supermarket....See MoreOld-lady clothes shopping :-(
Comments (26)I am like Marilyn. I don't do dress up. I own one pair of gray pants but they are probably too big for me now since I lost a bit of weight since last year. I'm overweight, over 60, wear jeans and mens t shirts. Still get hit on all the time. Like Emma said, it's attitude. I walk into a room like I own it. Using Poor posture and stance is the most aging thing one can do. I learned my lesson years ago at an awards ceremony for a scout thing. I was in my late 30's. After shopping most of the afternoon I was practically in tears. I hate most women's fashion. I am short and they make me look old and frumpy. Don't even get me started ranting about those stupid looking hobbit pants. LOL So DH said to wear what I wanted and I did. I went in clean newish (not faded) jeans and a nice sweat shirt which were in style back then. When we got there there we a sat down at an empty table. Later all these men came in and sat with up. The whole room was either in uniform or dressed up. The women were all in dresses and jewelry and such. Guess who had the best time? ME!!! We talked sports, autos and guy stuff. I think had I been dressed girly they would have been more subdued. The guy next to me was tipsy and hilarious. Turned out the guys at our table were all the national head honchos. They had been partying earlier. Now had I worn a dress or dressy clothes I would have been so uncomfortable I would have been evil. My personality changes for the worse as the layers of "feminine" clothing go on. So I have learned to stay in my comfort zone. The heck with what others think. The church thing? How nice of those women to judge. Bless their brittle little hearts....See MoreWhere Do You Shop For Clothes?
Comments (22)All of you are great! I so much appreciate your sharing your thoughts with me and I have a "sort-of" plan! I live in NC, in a very rural area. Walmart is the only game in town for close-in, but that outlet mall I mentioned is about 25 miles away, pretty accessible. And especially now that I'm retired and can shop when the entire rest of the world isn't there. So first I'll go over there and check out what I can find. Another ten miles or so and I can go to Sears, Penney, Belk. There's a big and relatively new shopping center in Durham with, I believe, a Nordstrom and heaven knows what all else. I've been there only once because every time I get ready to go some kind of violent crime seems to happen there, I get scared, and I stay home! (Mind you I haven't made plans but a very few times, so I guess it's not that often, but still...) Beyond that we're talking a 50-mile expedition to more urban areas. I'm not sure I want anything bad enough for all that! Sometimes I can fit nicely into junior sizes, if I could find any that didn't look like they're for somebody maybe 13 years old. At this point, I really don't need an applique of Tweety Bird on my butt! All this would be a lot easier if I had a little "fluff", if you know what I mean... kayjones, I love you! All these years I've been a Goodwill shopper on a regular basis, it's the only place I can find jeans that fit and that's what I've worn to work for years! And I've found lots of other things, too, believe me! Plus, it's my go-to place for books. I know where all their stores are within a 30-mile radius. But Goodwill is sort of a hit-an-miss proposition, maybe you find something, maybe you don't. So here's the deal: I'm checking out that outlet mall again. Then I'm going the extra miles to some of the other stores--I know I can find a Nordstrom and a Macy's, a Belk, Penney, and Sears. And I'll check on-line as well, though really, you need to be able to try things on and touch the fabric and all that. One store's size two is another store's size gazillion, it seems. I will report back and let y'all know how it's going!...See MoreWhere do you shop for clothing?
Comments (97)I have to add to this because of the unexpected finds yesterday while shopping with DD. As a young professional she does a lot of her shopping at The Limited. I found some very nice things there last year but it's not a store that I would normally frequent as it has such a "young" vibe to it. She kept pulling out things she thought would look great on me along with items she was trying on. I found nine tops and four pairs of pants. She had a 50% off coupon and I saved an additional 15% off because I opened a credit card. The total for all those items came to a tad under three hundred dollars and I paid the card amount off then and there because I don't carry card balances. I paid less for that entire shopping bag of clothes than I would normally pay for an outfit. All of the items that I bought were well made so I am very happy. The only items I still need for spring/summer is a pair of dressy black flats, a few skirts (I like the Soft Surroundings skirts), and hopefully a linen dress....See MoreUser
