dining "area" decor ideas

hello! I am looking to decorate my dining area. There is 9' ceiling height and approx. 33-35"width from wall corner to edge of curtains. Currently I am debating tall single mirrors over the cabinets OR art canvases, or square portraits with silver or mirror frames (two over each cabinet to form a tall rectangular image, and B/W photos). the grey mirrored cabinet is 16.6"d x 32"w x 33"h. The window is 4' x 6'. The dining table is 60"d. and the entire space is totally open to the rest of the main floor. The dining area is adults only with a rustic/glam feel. Also I would welcome any rug ideas! Just in general need ideas or suggestions for décor to add pops of colour, what to put on the cabinets (NOT lamps please). or even if these cabinets don't work to my favour, tell me! I am really starting at a blank slate and not sure which direction to go in. thanks!!

I would get 4 framed corresponding pieces of art and put 2 over each cabinet. I would put down a round area rug, as big as you can fit in that room. I'm not a fan of those mirrored cabinets, they're not providing enough contrast in the space and they're just getting lost and they look like they belong in a bedroom to me. I would use dark espresso colored pieces there instead. It's unfortunate that your drapery rod is not hung at the ceiling (see if you can fix that understanding it will impact the length of your drapery panels). Then I would switch out the lighting fixture to one that is wrought iron with some crystal bling in it so that it stands out more and gives more impact (the one you have now is getting lost and has no impact at all), and then get an ORB drapery rod to go with it. Then with your accessories you're going to need to show some creativity/style that I'm not seeing yet (everything in that space is very "safe") because your room is really dancing on the line of boring right now . You don't have anything that is really creating any visual interest, so you need to interject some flavor into that space or it's just going to sit "flat". And that does not necessarily mean color ..... monochromatic color palettes are great, but you run the risk of boring if you're not careful. You still have to have CONTRAST in any color scheme, even neutral ones.

We wouldn't do mirrors, and the mirrored cabinets are okay but we think cream might work really well. We would actually get artwork to go over the cabinets. We don't think you need a rug at all, but do agree that a different chandelier would make a big difference. Perhaps a round chandelier? We think you need some color though so make sure you get color in the artwork.

I think the stools need to be painted either the wall color or black. The white is too stark, as was mentioned. Or, pick an accent color that you want to use in window treatments in the DR area, and paint the stools in that color to make the whole space seem cohesive. I wouldn't probably do drapery panels. I would add painted casing around the windows to match the doorways, and make the window sill feel connected to something. Then I would likely do some kind of decorative fabric valances in a rich print that brings in the wall color, some of the brown/black of the furniture, and whatever accent color is a spark for you. A tall, full plant in the corner between the windows. Paint the inside of your niche in the accent color, too, and see if you can get a piece of granite that matches your counters to use as a bottom ledge for the niche. Your home is charming!

I have restyled the shelves in my living room. I bought some larger pieces to add in. I have tried to edit down, but I think I didn’t go far enough. It’s just so hard! Some of these pieces were acquired through the years at vintage shops, estate sales, etc, and they “spark joy.” But I’m really trying to elevate the look a bit. I would appreciate your impartial but very helpful suggestions on how to improve the decor on these shelves. I just finished this morning but don’t think it really is just right. Thanks!

@Keepthefaith MIGirl I won't be touching the brick/grout :-) but I do appreciate different points of view. What isn't obvious is that the brick that is on the wall is also on the floor in front of the slider and I didn't want light/white grout on the floor. Also, if you look closer at the brick (it's more visible in this pic), you'll see that some of the bricks are etched with city names. I didn't want the grout competing with this detail. Oh, and ignore the bat that's being used as a lock hahahaha
