1 Dining Room, 3 Holiday Tablescape Ideas
Draw inspiration and tips from these stunning table setups to add a nature-inspired touch to your Christmas gathering
Food brings people together, especially during the holiday season. And a beautifully decorated table helps to make an extra-special impression with your guests. Shawn Lang, a product design consultant, and Kristofer Prepelica, an oncologist, of The Farmhouse Project live in an updated 1800 farmhouse in Hortonville, New York, which they enjoy making festive for the holidays. Follow along as Lang decorates their dining room with the help of neighbor and floral artist Jill Wiener of Earthgirl with three distinct nature-inspired looks.
“Don’t be afraid to use nontraditional colors around the holidays,” Lang says. If you’re craving a bold, nontraditional tablescape for the holidays, this jewel-toned scape with gold accents is for you.

The floral arrangements include a mix of spray roses, Star of Bethlehem, lisianthus and carnations. Wiener kept the arrangements small and low so they could play around with placement on the table. “Make sure you consider visibility across the table so you can see your guests,” Lang says. “We also mixed in carnations in jewel tones that can easily be found in grocery stores at a very affordable price.” The flowers are in vintage silver-plated urns and teapots.

The white-and-gold vintage plates were used at Wiener’s parents’ wedding. A runner with gold patterns dresses up the tablescape and makes it more formal.
Naturally dyed linen napkins from Lang’s collection complement the jewel tones of the flowers.

“Don’t be afraid to use different shades of white if you don’t have matching sets of vases or plates,” Lang says.

Lang and Wiener used vintage milk glass as vessels for an all-white, simple floral scheme with daucus carota, or Queen Anne’s lace, put together in a loose arrangement. “You can find milk glass everywhere nowadays,” Lang says. “And it’s so affordable too.”
Vintage plates with a floral pattern from Wiener’s personal collection tie in with the floral arrangements. Dainty white napkins with delicate lace trim are paired with brass flatware to complete the tablescape.

“Mostly everything from this table was found on our 2-acre property, Lang says. “We love pruning the evergreens and foraging foliage and other greenery. You’ll also find us at our local nursery or garden center.” The centerpiece features a mix of moss, foliage, twigs and pine cones.
Vintage bird plates are paired with plaid napkins, and a wide plaid ribbon underneath ties all the elements together. “We added extra-thick plaid ribbon going down each side of the table. Don’t be afraid to mix plaid,” Lang says.

“The forest-floor tablescape is our favorite,” Lang says. “It goes well with our style and brings nature inside for guests to enjoy.“
The homeowners start their Christmas morning in this space, lighting the fire, turning on holiday music and tearing into their gifts. The mantel decor features layers of faux greenery, garland and large pine cones. “We always add a wreath and of course our plaid stockings,” Lang says.
When it’s cold outside, the little stove and the stone hearth and rocking chairs make this a perfect place to relax. “When the fire is on, we’re usually in the rocking chairs reading a book or favorite magazine,” Lang says. “The great room is where we spend most of our winter nights by the fire.”

In the corner of Lang and Prepelica’s great room is a dining area with a farmhouse-style table and re-covered chairs, where they enjoy hosting intimate meals each season. Overhead is a majestic coffered ceiling, and on the walls is chestnut wainscoting.
