Does frost damage just stop growth for a season, or does it kill?
Comments (3)Grapes are well adapted to handle these late freezes. They have secondary and tertiary buds that are dormant and the new growth from these buds will even produce a crop on many types, although it will be smaller than what would have been produced on the primaries....See MoreWinter kill with sprouts - will new growth be a fragile tree?
Comments (3)I don't think it will be an issue provided the area below the new sprout is undamaged. That would mean healthy and growing bark all the way around. You won't know that until the tree increases in diameter over the next couple yrs. Damaged areas will show up as sunken while live bark increases in diameter. I'd cut the old trunk off at some point at an angle, higher side towards top shoot and not much stub above new growth. You want that cut to grow over asap. That requires live bark all around. I'd stake/support the tree a few yrs. Until it heals over well it may not be as strong as undamaged. So it's your call on keeping tree. PS: You can try the scratch test on that lower trunk. It might give you an idea what's going on. Bright green and it's alive, brown or streaked brown/green and it may be dead in that area. Comments (1)I'd be inclined to leave it alone and see what happens. Crimson clover is pretty cold hardy and it's very likely that underground portions of the plant are still viable and will resume growth as temperatures warm. However, October/November is pretty late to plant this particular cover crop so it may not have had sufficient time to establish adequately before the cold hit. Recommended planting times in our area is late August into September. If the clover is truly dead, any type of good organic mulch to cover the planting area will help. Use compost if you've got it!...See MoreShould I prune off the killed new growth?
Comments (18)Hi Sheila, The pots are wrapped in black builder film. That helped a LOT!!! But apparently not enough. Maybe watering them twice a day would have done the trick. >>>The water could be running through without absorbing. This actually happened. I once saw a puff of dust come out of one drainage hole!!! I have since then adopted the leaky bucket way of watering. Got a 9 liter bucket. Made 3 holes on it on one side. Balance it on the rim of pot on a plank of wood. Fill it up. And forget it. Has worked wonders till now. But will need to fix a watering system. Especially since I got other plants in 511 mix. However roses being roses, they are still putting out some new growth. Hopefully they will escape as temperatures are going down now. I should really cut down on plant food. Maybe they are not as heavy feeders as everyone says....See MoreHeruga (7a Northern NJ)
