Wow! And I thought my late husband was big - he weight over 11 pounds when he was born in 1941! A baby that big should sleep through the night pretty quickly, but he will have a voracious appetite.

I’d think he’d wake up often, though, because he’s so hungry!

He and his mother are at a greater risk for developing diabetes because of the high birth rate. I noticed that the hospital was monitoring for low sugar so he may be hypoglycemic.

All I can say is, "ouch."

My newest GD was supposed to be low birth weight according to the doctor. She was a very healthy 7 5oz but looks and feels like a teeny little thing. She's three weeks old today and was 8 3oz and added a 1/2" at her appointment Thursday. My biggest baby was 6 10oz.

Terri was/used to be considered to be caused by gestational diabetes even if the mothers blood sugar was find throughout the whole pregnancy. There have been lots of studies since then and other causes have been found.

I hope baby and mom continue to do well. Wonder what the record for largest baby ever, is.

DH was over 10lbs. The recipe for his "formula' makes us all GAG. Corn Syrup was one of the ingredients. How could doctors be soooo stupid just 60 yrs ago!! My daughter was 10.3 lbs. The doctors decided I had to have un- diagnosed gestational diabetes and watched #3 like a hawk. They were WRONG. My third was 9.7 lbs. All three of mine were over the 90% for height and weight their entire well baby check ups.

Likely to become even more common as obesity, in pregancy, rates increase.

Look at the parents. This is not healthy at all. That child doesn't have a chance to be a normal weight.

Agreed, Lily - they're all quite big. I'm happy that they have a healthy baby and I hope it stays that way.

Wow...that poor little baby in the pictures. That's child abuse plain and simple...IMHO. Almost certain to have a life of health problems, shortened life span,

and of course, a guarantee to be bullied, if they don't step up and help him now. Hopefully, looking at the two of them, they can get help for all of them. I sincerely

uptown gal the article mentioned that the mother has polycystic ovarian problems. Women with that health issue will almost always be heavy. The extra hormones that they ovaries release insure that. Even if her ovaries are removed the amount of fat that has been deposited since she started her first cycle will never go away. While like most she can reduce her size she will never be of what some consider a normal weight. While I agree that she and her husband should loose weight knowing more about her and many other women who have the same health problem can prevent the weight shaming.

My two babies were 8 lbs and 8lbs 1 oz. This was in the early 70's. Both are quite tall - son is 6'4" and daughter is 5'10. Son is now overweight but that's because he has continued to eat the way he did when he played water polo in college (burned 8000 calories in a weekend tournament). Daughter is slender.

Her two children were 8lbs 7 oz and 9 lbs 7 oz. Both are very tall - eldest is 6'2" and his younger brother is close to that and only 16 and still growing.

His daughter is very tall but quite slender. Can't remember what she weighed. Her mother had a difficult pregnancy.

My late husband (the one who weighed over 11 lbs) only got heavy in his 50's and even then not morbidly obese. He was just big as were all the people on his father's side of the family.

No diabetes in our family at all. Babies can be large for many, many reasons, not all of them unhealthy ones.

Oh please!!! Not every big child suffers from a disease/condition, nor his mother. My daughter had a quick, easy vaginal delivery. No one commented on the baby's weight - he had a high APGAR and was just fine. He's always been the biggest in his class in school - he comes from a family of tall, big boned people!

My MIL did have trouble delivery my enormous husband, but she was or normal size - husband came from "big stock" and he and his siblings had all been very large babies. All quite healthy. I have no idea why they didn't do a C-section, but it was in 1941 and nurses in hospitals were in short supply, so perhaps that is why. Since all are now dead, no one to ask.

Reported infant spent a week in the neonatal ICU due to respiratory distress, low glucose levels, and low platelets - not signs of a healthy newborn.

The weight of a 6-9 lb newborn is within normal limits; 15 lbs is literally off the charts and should raise concern for pathology.

As a country, our infant mortality rates are concerning.

The baby is obese. The parents are obese. The 2-year-old girl was not considered obese at birth, but we don't know if she has become obese.

I remember hearing about a risk for obesity in children who were *underweight* at birth. They were pushed to gain weight. Risk developed when Mama never stopped 'fattening up' her child. Another factor was that these infants quickly developed more fat cells, leading to a body with too many 'storage' cells, all craving to be filled.

I have no doubt that the vast majority of big, big babies today is the obesity of the mother. And that is a health risk for her and for her baby. Obesity automatically puts any pregnancy into the "high risk" category. Living in a state that is known for its obesity problem, I see this often. That huge baby was not a healthy baby at birth. It may have been his size or it may have been his mother's size and overall health.

But not all big babies are a result of this and these babies tend to be just fine.

I was a very slender child when I was little. This was in the 1940's when children were supposed to be "sturdy", not slender. My other, an older mother, worried constantly about this. I can still hear my pediatrician's voice telling my mother that I was just a fine-boned, slender child and to quit worrying. But worrying was an art form for my mother and her life's work was to fatten me up. So I got lots and lots of hot bread with plenty of honey or jelly, lots of desserts and of course, there were always cookies for snacks. In high school, she became so obsessed that she had me eat a small filet mignon every morning for breakfast, with some fried potatoes (I didn't like eggs in those days). I was still slender.

Then I reached my late 20's, and became less slender. By my mid-30's, 10 pounds less would have been better.

Now my mother had a new campaign! I needed to LOSE weight, not gain it! But of course, she would scold me about this as she was passing a 2nd helping of pie my way.

My mother was a very difficult woman and very hard to please.

At 106 pounds I had a nine-pound baby and another one who was almost eight pounds. My mother weighed 100 pounds and I weighed eight pounds seven ounces at birth. Mine were natural births, hers was a Cesarean. My mother and I weighed /weigh the same all our lives and the babies are now tall skinny adults.

I don't have a comment for the slim women who have big babies, but THIS baby is at high risk for multiple problems due to obesity. Can you say type 2 diabetes in children? Once almost unheard of, now common. The parents are obese, and the baby is obese. PCOS is probably not the only weight related issue this poor mom has. If she doesn't have diabetes now, she will soon enough. The husband too, and probably the baby before it becomes a teen.

I feel bad for them, having their pictures plastered everywhere and people commenting on their weight. I wish them all the best.

I'm barely 5' tall, if I stand up real straight, and when I had my babies, I was a wee little thing. My first baby was 10 lbs and 23" long. I weighed about 130 when she was born, and was downright skinny after delivery. Honestly don't think "pregnancy obesity" contributed to her weight. She's now almost 10" taller than I am, and very slender. She had a set of twins that were born at 35 weeks; one was almost 8 lbs and the other 6lbs. My boys were also 10 lbs at birth, but normal length, and they are normal size today. My obstetrician said I was at risk for diabetes because of their weight, but here I am at 72, and still ok. I know several very obese women who give birth to tiny 6 or 7 lb babies.

Grandson was just under 11 pounds at birth. Natural, unmedicated, vaginal birth. He was exclusively breastfed with zero supplements for his first 7 months. Continued to outgrow clothing at an alarming rate. We thought he might be delayed in crawling, standing etc. due to the extra weight. Boy were we wrong. Hit all the milestones on point and by the time he hit 2 years old was a slender, muscular little athlete. Today at 4 years old (5 in late summer) he is the height and weight of an average 7 year old. (size 8 -10 clothes) No health issues at all.

My MIL is not a big person, and all 3 of her babies were big. The smallest was her oldest, who is now a large guy. Her largest baby was my DH, who has never been overweight- go figure!

Family history had it that my uncle was 16 pounds when he was born. But then he was weighed on the fish scale!

My dil was tall and thin and the first child weighed 11.2, send one 11.6. The first child is now 5.7 and wears a size four. Second is a boy 6.1 and slim. No sickness at all.

Wondering if those that had large babies developed diabetes later in life.
