Help convert family room to formal living room!
Comments (5)Well -- start by clearing the room completely -- that move alone can really help you see the whole space in a new light or form! Also: what items do you currently have to furnish it? What do you need? How about painting the room? I like the rug -- and the shelves. Clear the shelves -- and simply add some books -- and modern clean-lined glass or silver/plate items -- like bowls. For a modern touch -- add a gallery of black-and-white photos -- mat alike and frame alike too. If you plan to keep the TV in the room -- then consider angling the unit into the corner at the left-hand side of the far window. Then step back and really look at the space -- would a sofa work against the wall where the computer desk now sits? Then add a couple of armchairs and an ottoman/long coffee table. Lots of lamps too. Maybe roman blinds at the windows....See MoreWhat color paint? Pic of dining room, foyer, formal living room
Comments (11)Thanks everyone! We are installing hardwood throughout the entire downstairs. The revere pewter is actually through french doors off of both rooms but you can't really see itwell from either room so I am not so worried about that going with the other rooms as much. It is mainly this view I want to flow well. I considered van cortland blue for the formal living room but it might be too dark/bold for me. I tend to be more neutral/conservative when decorating. And yes I love the yarmouth blue but don't think I want it everywhere. It looks perfect in the dining room....See MoreNeed help with formal living room off of dining room
Comments (15)Candid! The first thing I saw in both rooms were the window treatments. The living room valances, although formal in design, are a dated look even for kitchens. The dining room drapes and swag should be framing the stage in a theater; they're just too heavy and dark. The red art in the dining room and the blue art in the living room are "off" elements in contrast to you furniture. The red ones might work in your kitchen, and the blue could theme another space. Dried floral arrangements and sticks as decor faded a long time ago. The living room rug should be as large as the one in the dining room. What to do... Here's a favorite house of mine and you have the furniture to pull off a similar look if you just simplify and get a larger rug and some side tables and a coffee table that are in scale with your other pieces. Click through the link with the photo to see other rooms in this lovely home. Brighten up your space by painting both rooms as below (believed to be Navajo White walls and White Dove Trim.) Consider wainscot for the dining room and a new chandelier. Updated window treatments that match in both rooms, larger rugs and less clutter would improve things. If you do paint, then removing all the tchotkes will happen anyway. Pack them up and only put them back judiciously....See MoreFormal Living Room into Office
Comments (9)You can absolutely use a living room as an office! I've been using mine for almost 20 years now. It measures 13' x 24' and serves double duty--when I need to work, it's an office, and when I have visitors it's a nice sitting room. I also have a center hall Colonial like you have, with living room on the left of the foyer and dining room with entrance to kitchen and family room on the right. I started out using the small sun porch (off the living room) as my office, but it was small and had too much sun glare. So I moved the desk, computer and printer to the living room, and kept the bookcases and filing cabinets in the sun room. There are no doors closing it off since (1) the work area is in the back of the room, invisible from the foyer, and (2) hardly anyone comes to our front door! Here are photos: Living room with desk, computer and printer (in bay window). Also has lots of seating, piano, and fireplace. Bookcases, filing drawers and various office-y must-haves: The sun porch also has a small table where I can work as well. The chest of drawers to the left holds paper, and other office supplies. If I had to, I could move the bookcases, chest and filing cabinets to the living room. As you can see, it doesn't look like a commercial office--all the furniture is residential type items....See MoreSofia Akhter
