Paint baseboard molding before or after attach to walls?

User

I bought a compound mitre saw that was on sale for Black Friday and learning how to use it, and I will buy a finish nailer or brad nailer as well.

I'm going to be using 5.25 inch baseboard molding in three rooms that will have carpet installed in them.

Two of the rooms are already painted in the new paint color I chose.

I was planning to put little 3/8 inch height blocks on the floor and possibly use a laser level also and install the boards first, and then paint them. That way I could put the caulk on first and paint over it.

But some others have told me to paint the boards first and then attach after the carpet has been installed.

Which is the best way?

Also I was planning to leave a 3/8 inch gap under the boards. Is this a "safe" amount of space for a low pile carpet?

Thanks.
