Bad smell from bathroom sinks
Comments (6)I've had a bad smell coming from my sink. Last fall I pured Liquid Plumber in, let it set and flushed it down. I poured vinegar (straight) in, let it set and flushed it down. I used bleach and flushed it down. Each time, after a day the smell came back. We left for 3 months this winter and when we came back there was no smell. Now,after a week it started again; I poured Simple Green in the sink-straight so it would set in the goose neck pipe underneath; then flushed with HOT water in about an hour. Smell went away, then 2 days later it is back again. Now...I am thinking that because it's an earthy/moldy smell,, could it be a broken pipe underneath and the insulation is wet and rotten ... could that be it? We also remodeled that bathroom 4 years ago and had a new sink put in, but not new plumbing. HELP PLEASE! We use Mentadent toothpaste, but rinse it well with warm water afterwards. Our other bathroom has never been remodeled and hubby uses it every day and it doesn't smell at all....See MoreMaster bathroom help-crosspost from bathroom forum
Comments (19)olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? Lastly, I had the idea of applying pieces of beveled mirror framed by black molding floor to ceiling along the back wall and continuing behind the toilet (similar to this only floor to ceiling with the exception of base molding & crown): [Traditional Bathroom[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional-bathroom-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_712~s_2107) by Northbrook Architects & Building Designers Michael A. Comments (46)Thank you David! When having this house renovated post purchase, much of the bathroom was gutted and the sink I had installed is one I bought new some years before and was waiting to use (American Standard Standard Collection Console sink with oval glass shelf.) Because the works underneath are totally exposed I bought the best chrome P-trap and fittings a local plumbing supply house had. In a month or so I'll have my plumber back to install a pump for my utility sink, and he will need to add another vent stack I believe, so I'll have him see if the sink is connected to the bath vent, and if the vent has any blockage. I'll ask him about the air admittance valve - thank you so much for that information!...See MoreNeed help identifying sweet smell from AC / HVAC fan
Comments (7)I found the solution on another website and it worked! A couple of weeks ago I had a sweetish odor coming from my AC vents and I had no idea what it was. I thought it was a freon leak and had my handler replaced $2k. The next day I still had the sweet odor. I researched everything on the Internet. And finally several days later I ran across this solution which worked for me. Each day the odor is getting less and less. It's 95% better now. I am copying and pasting the exact language that I found on the other website. I hope everyone will share this and I hope it works for you. This is from bobvila.com: "There is more than one smell described here, but the one most often described is without a doubt hydrogen sulfide. It's a component of sewer gas (along with methane, and other nasty stuff). Some sources say it's non-toxic, but it can cause health problems like migraines. We have had the same problem, and it turned out the the p-trap for a bathtub we don't use had all of its water evaporate. That allowed the gas to collect under our home, which meant the first run of the heater made us sick. All it took to fix it was running the water in that tub. 1. Make sure your toilets have wax rings and the bolts holding them to the floor are tight. 2. Flush your toilets, run the water in your sinks, and run the water in your bathtubs. 3. Flush the gas by pouring bleach down the drain. That should clear it right up. You may want to run your blower with the windows open early in the heater season to clear out any lingering fumes and air that has been trapped since last year."...See Morelaurelcollins
