Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Mirror size for over 55" double vanity

Hello,

I have a 55" double vanity (yes, it's small) and need to find two mirrors or one mirror to mount over the vanity. The sink areas are each 20" and I plan to have a vanity light over each sink. The height of the lighting will be at 7 ft and my vanity comes to 34". With outlets and backsplash totaling 5", how large should I go for the mirrors? I love the look of the vintage pivot mirrors from Pottery Barn but I'm not sure the dimensions will work for me (Regular size is 19" wide x 23" high, Large size is 23" wide x 34" high). Will either size work for my small space or should I just commission a custom mirror?

I don't know that I would try to hang two mirrors in such a small space. I think it may just accentuate the fact that your vanity is too small to have two sinks in it. I would get one large mirror centered with the entire vanity. I wouldn't pay for something custom, there are a million large mirrors out there.

cpaul1 this is exactly what I was thinking and i'm also leaning toward one large mirror, but finding that perfectly sized mirror is seemingly impossible. Should I get a mirror that is slightly smaller than the width of my vanity? Maybe 50-52" wide?

Tricia, go for the two mirrors and use the current electrical box as a junction box. Check with your local inspector for further details on adding two additional *remodel* electrical boxes. Codes are different everywhere, but he'll know what's safe for sure. I know this because hubby must have been tired when he wired the master bathroom and put in a centered electrical box for lighting our 84 inch vanity. You may have to use conduit or a special covered wire, but there is a way to make it work. Good luck! ~Becky

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I hadn't thought of frame less but found the shape of Beverly's drawing (Beverly you are quite the artist!) in a frameless mirror for a really great price. You're lucky to find sconces that only are only 1.5" wide. We have a 72" double sink vanity wall to wall, with sconce>mirror>sconce>sconce>mirror>sconce. Our 2 mirrored medicine cabinets are each 21.25" wide centered over 17" wide Caxton sinks and our sconces round bases are 5" wide, so it sounds like reducing your cabinets to 24" would be fine.

If a "smaller" 36 inch medicine cabinet is okay for you, I would suggest the Jensen Granville (755379). It already has lights attached to it and comes in he same color and classic style as your vanity. Also a bit narrower, just 32 inch, but more modern and elegant is the Lighted Vanity Mirror by Mirrors and Marble: Matchin your style perfectly and fiitin in size as it is 48 inch wide is the Concord by Design House. In terms of scale I would take the last one. Add 3 or 4 lights and enjoy. Hint: The more diffuse the light source, the more beautiful you look in your new bathroom cabinet ;)
