Cabinet above closet door build

Hello All,

Our contractor moved a closet for us and didn’t finish the job. I want to add a cabinet type door to the top and I’m looking for advice on how to build it. I’ve built furniture before and I’m pretty handy but this is new to me. Any tips or plans to go about building a low profile door to cover this eyesore?

maybe show us a picture of the door below, so we can see all the woodworking details?

And the surrounding wall, so we can see what else is going on?

My vote is to start with a 1/2" or 3/4" slab of plywood or MDF, and the apply molding to it to mimic the door below. That looks like somewhat standard molding there.

You said you want a cabinet-type door, but what if you made it a simple slab (plywood with iron-on edge-banding), and just painted it to match the wall, almost as if it were simply part of the wall? That might be unobtrusive.

There is no way to give an meaningful estimate, mother than to find out what the local average for price per square foot is for the work you want done---add on/remodel versus new construction. If there is no plumbing, the cost should be lower. But, costs/fees for surveying, soil compaction(for foundation) and permits/etc. have to be considered. Sounds as if the plan would increase the value of the house to some extent. My personal belief is if a person wishes to spend decades in a home, has the money to spend without putting their finances upside down, and simply wants the home to be theirs and comfortable, who cares about resale value

Hi Milele; I,m new here, but if it's ok I'll give you some of my thoughts. What size door are you talking about? Seems like a used doors, if in fair shape, would do for your purpose. Sometimes construction guys might know where you could get some. You could call a few. The worst that could happen is they would tell you no. Call a few. Another idea would be to look in the Penny Saver or put in a want ad. You could also check out yard sales, and even if the people don't have what you want displayed, ask. If you want new, guys that do custom cabinets very seldom make their own doors or drawer fronts. You could ask them where they get their doors made and then go there. Sometimes the doormaker has doors laying around he will let go for cheap. I don't know if any of this will help, but I hope so. Good hunting.

Something else. In my whole house posted plans here I've been taken to task for not having any towel hanging space in the master bath for one house, to not having a place for the dog to sleep in another and in the last one the big thing someone noted is I forgot the "north" arrow. LOL! So I need a north arrow on everything now!! Seriously, glad you like it. It's rare I put pen to paper here but I was in a good mood yesterday! And it can be done contemporarily (is that even a word?). No arch (but still go with a bulkhead to better visually tie in the closet to the whole thing) and it doesn't have to be drywall. It could be a different material like birch to give it a cleaner, contemporary look. And modern light fixtures to add a nice touch.

I am so grateful for this feedback I have received today. And thank you again PPF and Bryan911 for all the helpful details. I am going to see about a new upper cabinet. We’ve put too much into this project to let two upper cabinets good us up :) I had a lot of people including a designer I hired for a short time out eyes on this, and we still missed it. Just goes to show you how difficult it can be to build a house and get all the details to work out as hoped. PPF — the reason we broke up the expanse of the pantry door with shaker panels was since we wanted it to look integrates with the cabinetry and to break up the tall doors since we have 10’ ceilings. I do agree also about hinges that can be hidden. It also annoys me that they are such a bright gold when my lights and cabinet hardware will be more of an aged, satin brass. Is it easy to switch out hinges and not mess up the doors?

I think a cabinetry-style door would distract from that lovely woodwork.

I would cut a piece of plywood to go all the way to the ceiling so that it almost looks as though it's part of the wall. Cut it tall enough to brush the ceiling and the top of the woodwork, and wide enough to overlap on the sides wide enough to attach a hinge to the back on the wall side, and the same distance on the other side.

Iron on some edgebanding, and then install a pair (or three) hinges on the right side, and a push latch or touch latch on the other side, so there are no visible hinges or pulls.

Paint it all to match the wall.

I think that'll be much simpler as well. Trying to match the molding (in shape and stain) could be tough, and I personally would find it easier to install a hinge on the back of the door than on the edge. And you wouldn't have to worry about matching the depth that much either.
