Help with loft decorating

I am trying to arrange a cozy reading area/study area for my daughter in our upstairs loft area. I purchased a large chair and bookshelves with glass doors. (the glass doors or not on the bookshelves yet).I am not sure what other chair to put in this area. I have a picture of another chair I’m thinking about but I am also wondering if I should purchase another big chair instead of the one in the picture.I have also thought of getting a different cushion for the chair in the picture. If I purchased another big chair how would I arrange them? I have two arrangements in the pictures and wonder if either are OK. My second question is about the rug. I have used two different shape rugs from around my house so these would not be used but I don’t know whether to get a round rug or a rectangle rug. I would also like to get a floor lamp and small table. If anyone has any ideas on what to do with this area I would welcome them all!

5 years agoI would skip the rug, replace the pouf with a round ottoman, add a small end table for each chair and a task lamp on each side of the bookcase in arrangement #2. Art on the wall over the stuffed chair. I would keep the Poang chair; another big chair will crowd the space.

Help with narrow bedroom in loft style apartment
Comments (3)The best you can do is to center the bed on its wall. I assume the door on the left goes to a walk-through closet to the bath so I would try the dresser there. Use some matching bedside tables that arrive at mattress height and with a lamp, the overall measurement should be 58-64" above the floor. As for the big blank wall, try some Indian shops for a bolt of exotic fabric to compliment your bedding. You can hang it on the wall. If it is cheap and long enough you might buy the whole bolt and actually drape it over the wall to hang in both rooms. You could opt for fabric behind the bed instead, if you find something else to hang on the big wall. Fabric will help with sound issues since you have a lot of hard surfaces. Consider anchoring the bed with an area rug slipped under the bottom 1/3 of it. Its more trouble, but have you considered painting the bed in a color from the spread or in a charcoal or black like the windows/floor? The white is kind of bland with your spread and if you go to more exotic fabrics the bed will need some spice to hold its own....See MorePlease help me decorate upstairs loft game room!
Comments (6)Not sure you would be open to it, but carpet, rather than wood, will help absorb some of the noise from the area. I would try to incorporate your husband's sports decor. It will mean a lot to him, and your son may enjoy it, too. The space can remain a "cave" yet, as it's not very visible from your main living area. How old is your son? any artwork? is this only for reading? can you back up and give us a wider view?

5 years agoThe area is only about 6x9 so I don’t have room for a desk too plus my daughter has one in her room she doesn’t use. She usually does her work on the couch in our family room. We have a media room so I don’t want a tv here. My guest room is nearby so I wanted it mainly as an area to hang out for reading/working/relaxing. I’m posting another pic so you can see how small the area is.
If I don’t do a rug, I feel it will lack in color. I do plan to add artwork.
Anyone else have input on rugs or arrangement?

5 years agoI think the bookcase just makes it too crowed. if you want a sitting space, do a small L sectional, or a loveseat and a little chair. use some wall shelving if you want a place for your books
you can do either shape rug, it just has to be a bit larger. I think a rectangle would look better though. for colors, I like any of these to go w/your black and white

5 years agoThx for the suggestions. I ended up putting another comfy chair there and at someone’s suggestion, a cowhide rug which I love. Adds some fun and interest. Put up a pic, added a lamp and a colorful ottomon. Love my space now!
