Fruit or veggies?

If there was a tray of fresh veggies and a tray of fresh fruit, of which would you eat the most? I will chose veggies any day of the week. Although I like fruit, I love veggies with dip.

Judy, be honest here, if there is no dip, which would you choose? I would be 50, 50 if there was dip. If no dip, just fruit for me.

Still would eat the veggies first.

I'm not sure WHY someone would MRI a vegetable, that's pretty expensive equipment, but I liked the exploding broccoli, it reminded me of fireworks. Annie

Bounty of fruit and veggies = Fruit Flies!

    Q

They seem to like Kombucha vinegar, but we haven't had very many this year, even with all the peaches I had sitting around. Had a few cherry tomatoes going bad, and the fruit flies didn't even find them. We keep a covered compost bucket outside the kitchen door, and I go on the offensive if I see any of the little dickens hanging out on the off-white cabinets. Both of my parents have complained that they have a multitude of FF, but they leave stuff sitting out all the time. My father resorted to hanging the long sticky traps--one needs to be very careful while leaning over his kitchen sink! In the past I've used the homemade plastic drink bottle traps, with a piece of slimy fruit in water or vinegar in the bottom.

Fruits and veggies that ripen after harvest

    Q

    Comments (8)
Most any of the commonly "winter stored" vegetables can get sweeter assuming they were harvested at the proper time and stored properly and assuming no disease or pest damage. The starches they contain covert to sugars over time. - potatoes of all kinds, fruits of all kinds, winter squash, turnips, rhubarb, carrots, beets, rutabagas, even some peppers. But the sweetening is a bell shaped curve and over time the quality begins to decline. Dave

Always veggies, with or without dip. I am not a fruit fan.

Fruit if it is in the morning, but veggies any other time of day.

I eat both, but no dip please. If there is choice, I would prefer fruit, but if there is both, I eat off both trays.

Always veggies. Too often the fruit is hard and tasteless.

Probably fruit. Depends on the dip.

Fruit. Every time I make a veggie tray for company, it goes virtually untouched. I need to invite you, Judy. :-)))

I've given up on the veggie tray with family gatherings and at work, 1/2 as much as in the past. Fruit for me. Veggies I want steamed with a bit of cracked pepper. Not into raw unless it's carrots (no dip).

I heard someone describe celery as crunchy water the other day. I love that. It's pointless. And since I don't like the flavor, even less desired.

I would go with the fruit. And no dip :-) Dental issues make most raw veggies uncomfortable for me to eat. I don't quite understand the comment about fruit being hard and tasteless.......IME, it is not at all hard to find ripe fruit at any time of year and even easier now that most groceries offer already prepared, cut fruit that is ready to go. I'd just stick with those that are obviously not out of season.....like peaches in December :-)

I used to enjoy celery, including that clean "tasteless" taste !! I really liked it dunked or filled with peanut butter or with a cheese spread or to dip in hummus. But it is too crunchy for my partials to appreciate now :-)

I like to dip most fruits in plain yogurt. Usually some type of ranch for veggies.

Both, either, or, and. Love both.

Love both, but I think veggie trays are easier to "get right" than fruit trays.

I agree with Lucille, it depends on where/when/how/why. I'll normally go for veggies, usually plain. Dips? Hummus, guacamole, yes. Anything else - no.

Fruit. I still like eating it even if it is tasteless, lol.

I crave fruit (the juicy varieties) like nobody's business, everyday. Always have; Mom used to cut up some fruit for our breakfast every day, and continued doing so after we were grown, if we were visiting.

It depends mostly on what varieties are offered. I love most fruits and vegetables, with or without dips. Second deciding factor would be 'when'. Before and/or during a meal, vegetables. After the meal, fruit. Party time, I'd probably alter between the two. As for the dip, that, too, depends on the 'variety'. I despise hummus, love a good spinach or French Onion dip. I have a recipe for a seafood dip that is really good on veggies, too. I'm not sure what the fruit dip I like is called, it's mainly softened cream cheese with a little sour cream and powdered sugar whipped in, along with a couple of drops of almond extract. I could eat that one with a spoon! But mostly, I pass on dips for fruit, prefer it plain.

Local fruit (May -October) with yogurt dip.

Veggies year round accompanied by a variety of hummus or black bean dips.

That's a tough decision. I like both equally well.

I'll give veggies a slight edge, since I tend to limit my fruit because much of it is loaded with carbs/sugars as are the dips often served with fruit.

It depends on my mood that day, and on the veggies. At work I would generally take equally from the fruit and veggies but some raw veggies I don't care for -- green peppers, radishes, broccoli (fine if they are roasted though).

Veggies. i ate leftover arugula salad this am for breakfast while dh and ds had fruit and yogurt.

Veggies, the only fruits I like are the melons and they are only good a short time of the year.

I'm not big on dip. If I put together my own tray, it is mixed. It depends upon what is in season and looks good. For example, I will not be serving strawberries for Christmas. I usually do things like cubed cheese, grapes, carrots, pickles, olives, and melon or oranges. I might use various bell peppers or something. It all depends. I don't like my cauliflower or broccoli or celery raw... so none of that.

I've been put off veggie trays by the ubiquitous supermarket trays with old/inferior veggies on them. I and most of my friends make our own with real carrots (not those fake "baby" carrots that taste like the bottom of a moldy plastic bag smells) freshly cut cukes, the best cherry tomatoes we can manage for the time of year, maybe some jicama. I skip raw broccoli, because people seldom eat it, same with cauliflower unless it's slightly blanched. I add romanesco if I can find it because it looks so cool and tastes good raw.

A long answer to say that if it's actually a fresh veggie tray I'd eat it, but would have equal chance of eating from a fruit tray if the fruit was actually decently ripe - no strawberries or melons in January (at least in my part of the world) good pineapple, grapes, apple or pear slices, etc. Especially if served with cheese.

I agree - the prefab stuff and the other things you like to avoid are all gross, though broccoli and cauliflower seem pretty popular around here. Fresh is best. Romanesco is cool, a real live fractal.

Oh yeah, yuck to supermarket trays with bleached baby carrots, soggy broccoli.

    Always fruit!

I like both, but it is really so variable depending on the type of veggies or fruit. Most people don’t realize a light blanching of some veggies like broccoli and cauliflower actually improves both the flavor and color when serving ‘raw’. Much more tasty. And I love English cukes, celery and carrot sticks, and cherry heirloom tomatoes. And juicy, fresh fruit, in season, cant be beat. Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, melon, pineapple, papaya, pear, banana. Bring it all on!

I would go for the chips and dip over both. But, if pressed to make the decision, probably fruit. Especially if there are big fat dark sweet cherries.

I always feel that a fruit or veggie tray at a party is kind of a filler. No thought, just something to fill the table with. My mom and sisters always insist on having both, and both pretty much go untouched.

Gardengal48, you've never bought fruit in Kentucky then. The stuff is horrible. Either not ripe or rotten, even if it looks okay on the outside, sometimes apples will be brown on the inside. Peaches, nectarines, pears are hard as rocks and tasteless. The only good fruit here if they aren't rotten are cherries, grapes and strawberries...sometimes they are unripe or mushy/rotten too.

To answer the original question, though, I would eat a little of both.

If I'm out I tend to eat from the veggie tray. I find eating veggies less messy to eat.

I eat both, seldom go for the dip. I do like dip, just don't eat much of it at all.

Interesting a lot of people say they do not like a "premade" veggie tray. I always make my own tray's. Never really thought about buying one premade. I am sure I have eaten them at party's though. Never thought about that either.

Kathsgrdn, if that is the case where you live then I feel sorry for you :-) Our local fruit is wonderful (but then I live in WA state and we are a major fruit grower). But even imported fruit - what is typically available in winter - is good if you pick it carefully.

I eat a lot of fruit. It is my favorite 'snack' item and I prefer fruit for a dessert after a meal than something too sweet and gooey like a pie or cake. At this time of year, the zipper skin mandarins are high on my list; ditto grapes, fresh whole pineapple. persimmons and winter (hard) pears. The pears are always hard when purchased....they need to sit out for a few days to ripen properly. If they are soft when purchased, they are already overripe!

And bananas and apples are available just about anywhere year round!! I can't believe that none are edible in Kentucky.

I guess it must depend on where you live and the quality of the grocery stores. I live close to a major metropolitan area and fresh, ripe, good tasting fruit is available year round. And I also benefit from having a couple of really superior grocers close by that stock premium produce, regardless of where it is sourced.

I love both with the caveat that the offerings are fresh. I'm not afraid of transported, out of season produce, as long as it has been properly handled along the way.

I make my own dressings to use as dips, a well seasoned tzatziki my favorite for veggies while a Greek yogurt gently (conservatively) mixed with a bit of honey and citrus zest is so good with most fruit.

I eat more of the vegetables by far, however, usually something substantial at every meal, starting with my big green sludgie in the morning.

The best fruit I have ever tasted comes liquid in a glass while sitting at a swim up bar in the caribean.

Rhizo - That's the same fruit dip I use - yogurt with some lime juice and lime zest and it's refreshing with most fruit. If I'm making a fruit salad I will also put that out with a combination of roasted pecans/sunflowers seeds/pepitas.

I'm in BC and we too grow a lot of fruit - strawberries, blueberries, apples, cherries (the cherries were so good this year), cranberries, pears, peaches, plums.....

We grow grapes as well but that's mainly for the wine industry. :)

Fruit, no dip, and never ranch on anything.

Kathsgarden, of course there are delicious fruits available all year round in Kentucky. You need to find another place to shop for fresh produce. I have some awful options in my city, too, but far more where I can pick up some pretty amazing stuff.

HU-13452394, every place I've shopped has issues, Kroger, Save A Lot, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc..found some wonderful ripe peaches at a farmer's market last year, this year they were awful. I quit buying apples at Kroger because they are always mushy or rotten even though they look fine on the outside. Oranges are tasteless. I do buy mandarin oranges if they aren't soft and mushy. Sometimes they are good. Strawberries are hit and miss, sometimes most are white, not red, if they are red they are rotten with mold on the bottom. I always turn the box over to make sure even if they look fine from the top. I learned not to just grab them and go. Other produce is sometimes just as bad. I don't know why some of it is even for sale still. Went to get some fresh cilantro at Kroger last month. Their tiny packages of them were rotten, almost $3.00 for them. I thought I'd just have to use dry instead when I walked further down the isle and saw huge bunches of cilantro much cheaper. I had to throw out some of it because I couldn't use it all but it was still much cheaper. Onions are another thing, hard to find non-rotten bags of onions in any of the stores. Sometimes I just buy the huge single onions even though they are more expensive because the bags of onions are moldy.

I eat both, but I have a preference for fruit. More veggies would be better for me.
