"Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted"...yeah, you started pretty early, and everything's gonna be leggy long and fallin over unless you have a lotta lights to put 'em under. Beans and corn and zukes especially are gonna get big before they can safely go outside, radishes could go out in a week or two, but they'll prolly just sit there, being transplanted so big...same with carrots, they don't like being transplanted...i'd just call it a learning experience, keep them alive and plant them out and see for yourself. THe tomatoes and peppers should do ok if you can get them in bigger pots, the onions should be fine too, if they're not too crowded in the pots. But haven't you had fun watching them grow?

tasymo, my apologies i haven't responded a bit sooner. it's summer and am busy along with a 3 day rodeo this weekend. (big doin's in a small town !) i hated like the dickens to start this thread without pics but thought maybe it will give other orchardists'/gardeners'maybe an idea to run away with. my top of the line 1200 dollar digital cam i bought about 6 or 7 years ago only works when it wants to. as such i been using that venerable 35 mil that keeps on ticking for the past 25 years. will keep fooling with the digital to hopefully get some pics. my fences are around individual trees and are square in design. i've used logs and limbs from 6 to 10 feet in length from primarily dead and down quaker aspens. i've erected maybe 20 so far and am still learning. size and design could be to suit your personal whims. i'm opting for the larger squares as i can maybe do a bit of gardening inside with my trees. i think as far as fence height goes 4 feet will be what i shall shoot for give or take. some of my fences are as low as 2 feet but the smaller ungulates just do not leap inside( i believe at their eye level it appears as leaping into a trap !). at this point i have made them quite sturdy just by interlocking limbs and shoring up with propped logs. one could also use rope or wire to secure corners or just notch the logs for stability. i'm more into functionality , but i'm sure these structures could be made to really look nice in a farm or rustic setting. i bet using freshly cut white birch would make beautiful fences in an more urban setting(maybe notched or secured with rope). as a further benefit i'm strpping off the quakers bark and am adding it to my mulch. am trying some pepper plants and vine plants inside but the crummy weather here has set my veggies back so from a practical gardening aspect i don't know whether i will have anything to report back on later. i imagine a climbing bean,pea or whatever could also be utilized. a bean plant (nitrogen fixer)could be cut off at ground level after harvest and the dying roots could release nitrogen for the fruit trees benefit. will keep tryin for some pics ! nick, im workin' on some squash - fingers crossed. wildlifeman

I just ran across this site because I was looking for a cause of this and if and how to plant my tomatoes. I have 2 tomatoes, on the same vine that were bought in the store about a week ago. My house temp is about 68-70 degrees and I have sprouts that broke the surface of the tomato. It looks rather cool but like I said, I don't know if and how to plant them or if I can this time of year. I just put a link on here, not knowing what I am doing to see if you can get the picture. But, can I just plant it inside, whole in the tomatoes so that I don't mess up the cause of the growth?

I had almost that same menu for Thanksgiving dinner, and I served squash soup as a starter. Also roasted asparagus as another side, which is festive for a dinner party. Go to the dollar store and get some cheap glass mugs, they will look fancy when filled with soup. I have a set that I use for both hot drinks and soups. A great dessert would be warm vanilla pudding topped with warm dried fruit compote. I had that at a friends house in Great Britain one miserable winter day, and have been a fan of that comfort food ever since. I just mix whatever dried fruit that looks good that I can get, with some orange juice, a cinnamon stick, a slice of ginger, a touch of maple syrup, whatever floats your boat. Edited to add that if you are not used to the immersion blender and use it on very hot soup, it can splatter and burn you, but once you get the hang of it, it works great. However, I think the plastic ones will wear out faster if you use them a lot on very hot foods. At least that has been my experience. I usually let my soup cool before blending, if I can.
