Range hood help! 36” or 42”?

Hi all! We’ve settled on a 36” range for our remodel (Bluestar). I’m not sure if we should go with a 36” range hood or a 42”? Less concerned about the CFM as that can be adapted but thinking from an aesthetic perspective. Is there a rule against going a little wider on the hood? Will the 36 look funny? Any thoughts or comments are most welcome!

Go to the BlueStar photo gallery. Most of their examples show the hood being the same width as the stove. They position themselves as "Professional Grade", so if they are ok with the hood not being wider than the stove I'm sure it will be no problem for you. No problem going wider if that's the look you prefer.

The 36” hood won’t look funny with your 36” range. Some people use a larger hood with their range.

You need a 42" hood to capture the smoke. 36" won't cut it.

It depends more on what you are going to be cooking. I assume if you are going to have the grill you intend to use it. That said then you need a very quiet and efficient hood that will draw off all of the HOGS....heat,odors,grease and steam. I have a Tradewind liner w/ baffles. I posted and noone looked at my post or at least didn't respond. It is 54" and 1400 cfm. It is extrememly quiet and I have never had to wipe any grease from surrounding areas since I started using it 2 years ago. If you do not get a quiet hood you will not want to use it. Also you will want baffles as they are quieter and also more efficient at gathering the grease. The other thing to look at is ease of cleaning. My entire unit takes 5 min one time a week to clean. The baffles go in the DW on Sunday night. We stirfry and use a grill pan on high heat and I have a built in deep fat fryer so I have put my hood to the test and it is perfect. You will also find that the hood does not need to be on High to be most efficient. There is a law of physics that applies and if you have too much suction you actually are counterproductive. Thus I get perfect capture on med of a 1400 cfm. Hope this helps with your decisions. Caroline

The crux here is that you believe that all 36" ranges cost $5000. As Clooney mentioned, I just checked on AJ Madison and there are several 36" gas ranges for well under that, for example a beautiful Bertazzoni for $3000. Also, there are some people on the Appliances Forum who love their NXR ranges, also $3000. I am assuming you are looking at an all-gas range. If you are looking at Dual Fuel, you will pay up for that. But IMHO, a dual fuel upcharge is not worth it. There are more electronics to break, and the idea that a gas oven is not as good as an electric oven is outmoded. I would not, if I were you, trade down from a 36" range to a 30" range. Also, since you said there are built-in cabinets above the range, what about the cabinets on either side of the range? Are those base cabinets staying, so that you are going to have to add something to fill in the 6" if you go from 36" range to 30" range?

I'm in the process of a kitchen renovation and looking for a new 36' df range and 42' side by side refrigerator. Overwhelmed with the options. Reliability is a big concern - I don't mind spending more money but am not interested in something that will break down down the road and cost an arm and a leg to fix! Do you love your range and refrig? Or what should I stay away from? Interested in all opinions. TIA!

The CFM IMO can be higher and you can keep a 36” hood no problem I do it all the time These both show hood the same size as the range. The one with the stone wall is mine before the space was finished as you can see at the top of the hood but I run a catering biz from that kitchen so all 6 burners going is pretty normal I have had no issues with capture in 11 yrs. The hood is a vent-a-hood with high CFM

The optimal setup would be a 42" wide hood over your 36" range, and front-to-back measurement of no less than 22", but preferably 24". If you don't want to use up what would otherwise be needed upper cabinetry, then do the 36" width. If you have the wall space, then a 42" not only captures smoke and grease better--since smoke and grease waft outwards during cooking--but it would also look more balanced.

Do not compromise on the front-to-back depth. Many less expensive hoods are only 20" deep which won't cover fully the cooking surface. Also, the height of the hood should be 30-36" distance between the cooktop and the bottom of the hood. Many people on this forum post because they've hung the hood too high or too low, so be aware of that measurement as well.

I have only encountered one stove that specified the width of the opening between the upper cabinets to be greater than the width of the stove. the only other time this might be applicable is for a wood enclosed canopy and it's bottom height is below the minimum clearance from combustibles.
