Electrolux Icon 30' - Range Hood or Over the Range Microwave
Comments (1)Additional info from Icon Microwave installation guide: ÂCan only be installed over ranges or cooktops with 33" maximum width. It does not specify "professional" vs. "consumer" but the salesman said that because it is a professional range you cannot install the microwave over....See MoreInstalling a 36" hood over a 30" range?
Comments (2)It is not only a "good idea," it is the best way to do it. Do a search on range hoods here and you will see that there is a general rule of thumb to have a hood that is the next size wider than the width of the stove. This collects more steam and etc. from the stove. When the hood is the same width as the stove, and not confined by cabinets, some of the vapor will curl out beyond the hood. A wider hood diminishes that. So, 36" hood for a 30" range is recommended. (As you have a 42-inch space, you could go that wide, if you wanted. A more powerful hood can generally run at lower speeds and thus be more quiet. OTOH, a 42" hood is going to be a lot more expensive.) There have been a lot of postings on this subject. Do a search and you will find numbers of redcent in-depth discussions One of the most helpful and knowledgeable GWers on this subject is Kaseki. Something to bear in mind, though, is the CFM rating. Some cities and towns have adopted codes that require make-up air (MUA) for hoods that pull over a certain amount of CFM. Codes vary. Some posters report that 400 CFM is the point where MUA is required, others have 600 CFM. MUA can be a good idea idea even apart from code requirements because it prevents CO backdrafting from elsewhere in a tightly sealed house (say, from a gas water heater or a furnace). Search on MUA here to get more information....See MoreA 42 inch hood over a 30 inch range ----????
Comments (8)Usually the diameter of the hood matches the range and the cfms required are determined by a formula (there was a chart here with that info long ago -- anyone have it?) that calculates the length of the duct run, room size I believe and one or two other factors. Getting it right is not arbitrary or merely a matter of opinion. An overpowered hood sucks too much air out of the room and becomes inefficient. Going too wide risks ventilating your counters. A good quality, efficient hood with cfms appropriate to the range type will be optimal. Femmelady's kitchen shows that perfectly. She has a pro range with an indoor grill plus a 24" wok stove next to it. I think they went with a 900 or 1200 cfm VAH and a photo she posted showed it drawing out the grill smoke -- even installed extra high as her husband is tall. Here's a link. Surely there are enough hood styles that one can be found to look good with the cabinets. I'd be much more concerned with technical issues, a good brand and proper ventilation calculus, especially if you plan to go with a high-powered range and one of the monster gas ovens. Here is a link that might be useful: femmelady's hood install...See MoreOver the Hood Range for 30'' Gas Cooktop
Comments (1)Whichever one has baffle filters (not mesh filters) and a canopy shape, not a flat shape. Quiet has to do with your ductwork from the hood to the outside. If it is narrow, like 6" diameter, it will be noisy, and it won't matter what brand of hood you buy with respect to the noise. Also, be realistic, that an exhaust hood DOES have a motor operating almost right in your face. Impossible to be really quiet. People have imaginary expectations of a hood being quiet....See MoreBuehl
