Learning from mistakes with grafted plants

My success with grafted plants has been not too bad over the years but I lost a bunch this past year. They were mostly David Austin plants and were absolutely fantastic looking on arrival. I thought we had enough rain last year and didn't water them as much as needed, perhaps.

I did soak them, and mulched them, but I didn't cut out any canes. Just received my Palatine order and read the instructions , noting that they advise reducing the number of canes and cutting back the lengths, pruning the roots slightly. Pickering used to advise the same thing. Maybe my David Austin plants were TOO good. I should have cut out some of those canes. What have you done to improve success with grafted plants?

I do not usually mound with soil. Have sometimes mounded with mulch. Thought I got more canker when I mounded with soil.
