Learning to graft
Comments (4)Otis, these are my 2-3 years old from seeds. I also did one big 10 years old. I will post pictures soon. I used most of the scions belongs from my other plants. I only pick the ones with beautiful bloom, heavy blooming, and not drooping. I have to learn to resize the pictures before I post, because I don't have enough bandwidth, and the pictures disappear soon after. Marie...See MoreLearning from Mistakes?
Comments (9)I can't believe anyone can have too much space in their garden - if so, i want to move to their place! My biggest problem this last year was the peppers. We had a really cool spring, and I planted them out too early and the darn things never forgave me for the insult. I also got a huge aphid infestation last year and I suspect it was because I did not have enough bean teepees up (again I screwed up on the timing of getting out the pole beans). Usually the lady bugs like to use them for their nurseries, so I am going to hafta make sure I put out lots of bean teepees this year. I planted a bunch of cosmos and that did pretty well as a trap crop, but I was an unhappy camper for about 3 weeks late spring last year. Glad to hear I am not the only one who can't seem to make enough compost (or get the timing right on stuff!). I am an avid lasagna gardener, but even layering leaves and grass clippings and straw year round doesn't keep up with the veggies needs (we have no soil here - just a couple inches of clay over caliche). I buy my compost from a local shop that is organic - top dress twice a year and side dress as things seem to need it. every time I hear someone talk about the importance of double digging I hafta laugh - when we need to dig a hole in our yard, we hafta rent a concrete chisel. Even a posthole digger won't touch the caliche. No way we can double dig here!...See MoreMay be you can learn from my mistakes
Comments (1)Yep, those are all common mistakes of newer growers. Most of us on this list have dealt with the same issues at some point. However, it seems growers need to actually makes these mistakes before they learn from them. But it is all part of the experience and hopefully, when we do experience these problems, they do not result in a complete loss off a growing season but maybe just a minor setback that we are able to recover from and still have a productive season. I am entering my third full season growing peppers and I know that I will wind up dealing with several new and different problems that I didn't experience in years past but I also know that some of the old problems will crop up too. And some of those will be self inflicted problems that I should have learned to avoid by now. Never-the-less, I am certainly looking forward to getting started with this coming season which is a month or so away for me still. I have a couple overwinter plants to keep me busy in the mean time. Comments (150)I am about ready to construct my 3 ETs thanks to Ray helping me out with the wicking baskets. I am going to try the removable cages. Home Depot sells the 24" 1/4" threaded rods for $1.47. Unlike bdobs, my local store sells the 36" ones for $5.87 each! , so needless to say I went with the shorter ones. I don't think I am even going to cut them.. I just hope they are not too heavy to adversely affect the cage support system and the aeration bench. The extra length above the soil might help a little for the taller tomato plants too. Then again..with enough twisting patience, I could twist the nut high enough on the bottom of the rod where the reservoir is to give some stilt-like support to the bench. That will give 8 points of 4" extra support in addition to the 4" cut drain pipe pieces for the bench. This might not be a bad idea since I am using the cheaper, thinner Sterlite totes ($7.50 each at Walmart). I don't want that cage system to jab a hole through the bottom of the reservoir, so I'm trying to come-up with a cheap way to add protective 'shoes' to the bottom of the rods. Possibly soda caps from 2-litter bottles of Coke can be 'shoes' glued to them. I bought the Glamos cages a few years ago at Walmart and accidentally took almost double. When I got home and was pulling the cages apart I noticed my mistake. I returned the extras to Walmart, but I bet that happens very commonly, especially when Walmart just asks you to run out and pull the UPC off one of them and run back to the check-out and asks you for quantity. Ooops! My cages are bent at the 'feet' from trying too hard to jam them through subsurface slabs of limestone deep in my garden, so when I get pictures up to share, don't be surprised by the artsy-look of the randomly re-formed shape of my cages....See Moreerasmus_gw
